In the newer models, the top and bottom racks are both safe to place delicate things. The heating elements are different in new models.
You should be able to check the instructions for your dishwasher on line if you've lost your book that explains how to use the unit.
Thank You! That's a good thing to know. I don't even know how old mine is (Kenmore Ultra Wash III), as it was in the house when we bought it 18 years ago.

our dishwasher is a maytag and its 10 years old.

I put my larger pieces on the bottom rack and haven't had any problems.
