Knife set on HSN

I ordered the Bon Apetit (sp?) set on clearance and so far I'm liking them. They are offering the long sharpening tool by the same company. The knives are made of German steel, whatever that means.

Is there another option for keeping the knives super sharp? I've never used a a tool like that and wondering if it's really necessary.
