Re: Kitchenaid Stand Mixer - tilt or lift

I have one of each. The tilt head one dates back to the 80s, and the bowl lift is more modern, maybe five years old? The tilt head was plenty powerful for most of the things I make (mostly breads), but I had a few recipes that needed a bigger bowl (dough climbing out as it's being kneaded), so when I found the bowl lift model on sale for Black Friday at Best Buy, I got it. The bigger bowl on the bowl lift model is handy, and I pretty much use that one exclusively. My tilt one is atop the fridge, should I need it anytime.

I'm a big advocate of the stainless steel bowls rather than the glass, or ceramic bowls often offered. They're lighter, and pretty much indestructible. I've seen the glass bowls break on cooking shows before ("The Great British Bakeoff" I think, but it could have been another show.) Both of my stainless bowls still look and work like they're brand new.

You'll see some people say the lift model bowls are harder to put on. Not really. Just line up the holes on the two nubs with the bowl tilted slightly towards you, then press down on the back of the bowl, and it plops down and locks in place. It comes off pretty easily too. The tilt head bowls can get pretty locked into place and need some effort to free them up. They twist in, and if you're kneading a heavy dough, it twists them in even harder. It can take a bit of a fight to free up one of the twist-in, tilt head bowls.

You can't go too far wrong with either type. They're both good.

@gardenman What you said is spot on to my experience.  In our last house the tilt head was problematic because the counter top was not as wide as this house, and you had to manouver beneath the top cabines, which were also lower above the countertop than this house.

Re: Kitchenaid Stand Mixer - tilt or lift

I had a lift. My cabinets were a bit lower also so it worked better. I liked mine but went back to my Bosch. Gave my KA to one of my daughters. She loves it.
