If I ever get a chance to re-do my kitchen I've been looking at samples, pictures, TV shows, etc and I've never seen a range hood I like.
Is a range hood generally necessary due to code?
Anyone else?

We had ours made custom to match our cabinets. You don’t see any metal. I want an exhaust fan and lights, but agree with you, I don’t want to see it. Ours was fairly expensive

This is my new kitchen island. It has a Fisher & Paykel smoothtop range. This was a replacement for a range that had a built in down-draft range. The range hood exhaust is a seperate unit from the stovetop. To be up to code, I had to have an exhaust system. So, when I replaced my countertops with Cambria, I had this Broan Elite (pop-up) exhaust system installed. Very expensive, but well worth the cost! I had it profesionally installed.
I spent weeks researching this situation, and it worked out well! Whew!
Make sure to call the county to check on the code. Everything I do now must be up to code to eliviate future issues!
Best of luck with your project.

Gorgeous!
My budget wouldn't allow but would be perfect. I want my stove top in an island, a hood would be so ugly over an island. Still looking at options

OP--my house is getting reconstructed from a fallen tree. It destroyed the upstairs and the roof, so thats where most of the work will be done---however.... while I have an electrician here, I am planning on replacing my 33 years old range hood that is not vented outside to one that is vented outside. I have so much greasy, oily residue on my cabinets, ceiling and just about evrything in the kitchen from cooking and I just couldn;t get anything clean anymore. Not sure about a code but just for the sake of the cooking smoke and grease being suc*ked up and out----it is my necessity. Now there are fancy pricey stoves that have the fan that comes out of the stove itself and is at the cooking level of the pots and pans when in use----but that is a dream for me. I have been researching all the different kinds and I will be talking to someone about my needs to see what kind of hood will be best.

@software - I don't believe range hoods are ever a requirement. However, I lived in a home without any kitchen fans or ventilation for about eight years (well, there was a small window all the way across the room from the range), and every time I cooked proteins, I really wished I had a hood that would at least circulate the air even if it didn't vent outside. I'd have to keep my windows and doors open for hours in some cases to clear out all the smoke and smells—not ideal, especially during the winter. When I remodeled the kitchen in my current home, I found a sleek, unobtrusive hood that fits my space and stays out of my way when I'm cooking. I've really enjoyed having the option of using the fan when needed, and even more importantly, I love having a light directly above the stove.
I would highly recommend having a range hood installed; as others have noted, there are some fairly attractive options if you do some research, even though they may not be perfect or cheap. Good luck!

My kitchen/dining room is 12' x 24'.
The kitchen is U-shaped and stuck over in one corner
On the other side of the room, there's a ceiling fan with light, plus I have beautiful French doors. I guess I don't cook or fry much but I honestly have never NEEDED to use my hood fan. To get rid of cooking smells, I run the fan and open the doors if necessary.
Every time I do cook, I wipe down everything. Takes me 5 minutes.
We're not talking deep clean here. But I don't have any kind of crud on my walls or cabinets. That's one reason why I bring up the subject. I find range hoods ugly & useless.
I would miss the light, I use it often, even when I'm not cooking.
The range with the pop up vent? Not sure how reliable the info but I saw one at Sears outlet for under $800.
EDIT CORRECTION - It was the vent only costing $800, no stovetop.

@software - One other factor to consider: If you have cabinets directly above or near your range, the hood helps to protect the wood from smoke, steam, or splatter damage (which can happen even if you're really careful). I've never noticed any residue on my cabinets, as I also wipe down everything around the range when I'm done cooking, but a lot of steam can be produced when boiling things, and moisture is not wood's friend.
