Kitchen Aid Hand Mixer - Is there a difference with performance from the 5 speed to 7 speed, 9 Speed?

My Cuisinart handmixer stopped on me after 15 years and I am going to replace it with a kitchenaid handmixer. I see 5 speed, 7 speed, 9 speed. What is the big difference with these handmixers? I would like to spend the least I can for this replacement but at the same time I want to buy it and not have to replace it again. Anyone have an experience with these mixers? I made a banana bread last night and had to use my big Kitchenaid standmixer for it.
