I need a dishwasher, looking for recommendations...

I'm looking for an energy efficient, quiet dishwasher with a disposal. I just need a basic model without a lot of extras. Our water heater is run by propane, I'd like to use as little propane as possible. Any suggestions as to what to look for and/or specific brand/unit? Thanks so much!

Mine's old, had it over 11 years now and never a service call on it. It's a Kenmore Elite (made by Whirlpool) and I'll buy another like it when it dies. I have a very open floor plan and it's so quiet I have to get up close to even hear it running.

Re: I need a dishwasher, looking for recommendations...

Bosh. I have installed 3 Bosh dishwashers for my sister, mother and grandmother. They are super quite, have filters for food debris instead of the grinder and have quick 1 hour cycles for things you need in a hurry. They also have adjustable shelves to fit darned near anything. My sister feels that if it can't go into the dishwasher, she doesn't need it in her kitchen. With two kids, now 5 and almost 3, the dishwasher is run at least twice a day. She had a Samsung prior and it went kaput about 1 year ago now. She got the extended warranty with Lowes but had difficulties and had to throw a fit for Lowe's to issue a credit quickly since she had such young kids and so many dishes to do. She also had a Samsung washer/dryer to have go through two washers and 3 washer motors, all under Samsung warranty. Lowes also replaced that one quickly when she did the whole "I'm washing diapers thing." She replace that front loader with a GE top loader. She had the Samsungs for about 3 years total.

Most appliances these days are not meant to last more than 5 years. I still have my original Armana washer and dryer; the old fashioned ones. I've only replaced the washer pump that I got from ebay for $18 instead of the $80 at typical parts shops. I found instructions online and did it in about an hour.

Re: I need a dishwasher, looking for recommendations...

I have used three different dishwashers in 30+ years of being a homeowner and by far, Bosch is my favorite. Different settings (pot scrubber to a rinse setting) allow me to use according to need. Given that I only scrape the big debris off a plate before putting it in the dishwasher, it works like a champ for getting dishes clean, even if they've been sitting in the dishwasher a day or two before the washer is full enough to run through a cycle. I almost never have to rewash items that didn't get clean. The machine is also so quiet that you can hardly hear it when it's in operation. They are pricier than many other brands but they are so worth the extra cost. Given the lifespan of a dishwasher and the volume of use, the extra cost for the efficiency and quietness of the machine is negligible. When my Bosch finally tanks, I will replace it with another Bosch. Hope this helps!

Re: I need a dishwasher, looking for recommendations...

Another huge thumbs up for Bosch. Last year, when my very old dishwasher finally died, I did a ton of research via published consumer reviews and by speaking to friends and family. Every single consumer review rated Bosch as the best, in every category, and every single person told me to go with Bosch. I am so glad I did.

I bought a model with few bells and whistles, but mine is rated very, very quiet, which is what I wanted. I honestly can't hear it when it's on unless I'm standing right in front of it, bent down with my ear next to it. Not exaggerating! It washes and dries everything beautifully. Could not be happier with it.

Another vote for Bosch. Mine is ten years old, stainless steel interior, tall tub, energy efficient, so quiet I have to go into the kitchen to make sure it's on. Love this appliance along with my Bosch stove. Good luck with your choice. LM

Re: I need a dishwasher, looking for recommendations...

I replaced my dishwasher last year with a Kitchenaid with a stainless steel tub. Love this one! It is energy efficient and quiet. The people on this forum helped me a lot with their recommendations and suggestions which I appreciated. My dishwasher was old so I didn't even realize that the insides of the dishwashers had changed so much. Check the racks and the widths and adjustability. Make sure they are going to hold your dishes, etc. My dishes are ceramic which requires a wider space between the slots. I saw some racks that had all these sections that won't work for the types of pots and pans that I have.

My advice is to check on line with the stores or brands that you interest you. This will help you narrow down your selection and then make your trip to purchase. This approach has saved me time and headaches. Looking at that endless line up of appliances and price tags always makes my head spin. I like to do as much research as I can before I purchase but there's nothing like hearing from the people who have already have looked or purchased. Think about what features you really need/want and what your budget permits. Check on the delivery charge and time. Is it in stock? Another note: stainless steel is really aluminum and will scratch so buyer beware.

I would buy Kitchenaid again. Hope this helps you.
