I just do not get it............................... .

I just will never get how people can say that they cannot afford to make a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. I assume that the ones making the statement live in a rsidence of some type with working utilities. And I understand that not everyone has a residence or working utilities, and I am glad that there are special banquets offered for these growing homeless families.

Yesterday, I stopped at a traditional grocery store in my area and while I had no intention to prepare a turkey dinner since we have plans to attend a brunch with some friends next Thursday, I purchased all that I need for preparing a turkey dinner this Sunday.

The Jennie-O turkey was $0.48 a pound. The carrots were $0.48 for a pound bag. The russet potatoes were $0.98 for a 5 pound bag. The cranberries were two bags for $1.50. Celery was $0.98. Hard rolls were 6 for $2.00. The (gross, IMO) french fried onions ere $2.29. Canned cream of soup was $0.75. Canned beans or corn were $0.65 a can. Cranberry sauce was $1.00 a can. Crescent rolls were $0.98 a can. Butter was $2.49 a pound. And Pumpkin pie was $4.99, and pecan pie was $6.99.

I bought a 14 1/2 pound turkey for $6.96 (I saved $17.04), and on the other things holiday related that I bought, I spent $16.68. All together, for this unplanned dinner, I spent $23.64, and I live in a big city and did not shop at a discount food retailer. There are six mouths to feed in our home and this feast will feed them at least two if not three times. For less than $25.00, I think this is an amazing deal and will never understand why people will always say that they cannot afford to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner. I also saw that a carton of cigarettes was $40.00. Is something wrong here?

I understand that people say they do not know how to do it, but with the internet, one can capture many different recipes. And just maybe, some day someone will realize that the workings of the WIC program should be expanded to cover the way all food assistance programs are delivered, with specifics on what can be purchased.

Sorry, I guess I am just venting again on our lopsided world!
