Over the years it would not be unusual for my brother and his wife to keep us waiting 3 or 4 hours until dinner or birthday cake was served. We'd often arrive to find my brother was still at the store buying some essential ingredient .. nothing on the stove. Oddly enough, my husband's brother and wife are the same way. Many times we etched out 3 or 4 hours for a visit, only to be held captive all afternoon into the evening.
I've never kept my guests waiting more than an hour before serving the main event.
