I keep mine in binders - one called Baking, one called Cooking, and store them by content (i.e., Pies, Cakes, Candy, Casseroles, etc.).
I have a lot of my favorite recipes on the computer. I save them by Recipe - Blueberry coffee cake (example). This way they are all stored in alphabetical order and I can find them easily. I set the font on large print so it's easy to read as I prepare the recipe.

I used plastic sleeves, as others have done. However, I chose to use my computer to type up all of our favorite recipes. This was a labor of love and took some time, as we had been married for 30 years at that time and DD was just out of college. When all was said and done, I had dozens and dozens of recipes on my hard drive which were converted to CD for long term storage. All recipes were then printed x2 and placed in sleeves and then into 4" binders: one for DD and one for me.
When I typed up the recipes, I wrote an introductory paragraph at the top of the page: "These are Great great great Aunt Lyda's chocolate chip cookies from Mason, Mich. I remember eating these as a child and just loved them so much." Or, "One day when we had bad winter weather, I took you to the mall and we went to Macy's first. I smelled garlic and immediately knew they were doing something downstairs in the "Cellar." When we arrived, a famous chef, whose name alludes me, was making chicken marsala, so I grabbed a piece of paper out of my purse and wrote down what he was doing. The following is the recipe for the chicken marsala we've been eating since you were 2."
Additionally, I have several hundred cookbooks to which I refer quite often. I'm definitely book crazy!

In my head

I still have my old wooden recipe box from the 70s which hold my favorite recipes from the 70s and 80s. I made my no bake cookies last month for the first time in years which were great btw. I rarely bake or cook anymore but would like too if I ever feel better. These are oldies but goodies.
My favorites are still the cookbooks I have from my mom.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I'm working on typing all of those I tear out or write out onto 4x6 index cards and place in a box. By typing I mean on a typewriter! I have this one I picked it up at a local thrift shop for $20 in mint condition, so it is worth around $600 based on current prices for it since it is the same color and model that many Hollywood people use. I have this box
by semicolon on Amazon. It was around $25. I was putting them in by name, but then realized how am I going to remember the darned name, so I'm using my handy dandy Brother P Touch label maker and relabeling the tabs. This box will hold tons, is pretty and holds the blank white cards. I would love some pretty one, but the ones designed for recipe use are rather expensive. This way, I'm working my fingers and enjoy the look of a typed card. I hope to find some colored ones to throw into the mix. The box comes in tons of colors, so if, I get so many, I can assign a box to a category. I also have the binder/page protector thing going on with my mother's/grandmother's collection. I used double sided tape to stick them into the page protector at a certain spot since so many are double sided cards sticking them to a plain page would make them difficult to read. I also stick the single sided ones to the plastic to keep them from shifting/floating around in the sheet. I have thought about scanning them into the computer and saving as a .pdf in categories, but I just like the old feel of paper and keeping my computer out of the kitchen.

For loose recipes, whether on cards or clippings, I use a photo album with slots for 4x6 photos.
I fold clippings to fit, because I can tell from the title and ingredients whether it's something I'm looking for. It works much better for me than whole sheet page protectors, which take up lots of room for far fewer pieces.

I am the official Keeper of the Recipes for my family. I have 4 generations of cookbooks, recipes from different family members old recipe cards and all of the recipes my Mom saved from the many magazines she received. I finally took most of the clippings and organized them into shoe box size plastic crate things with flip lids. At last count I have 6 crates most are from the small check out counter "recipe card" magazines but the hand written ones nd the many subscription card collections are mixed in with them. I found boxes that would hold 4x8 index card indexes to use for dividers for each section. I also have a cookbook program that lets me do a C&P to it then formats the recipes. For cookbooks I found a book someplace that was made for keeping track of recipes in your cookbooks. It has the sections like a regular cookbook but you write the name of a recipe and the cookbook and page. One line for each recipe. When I moved my cookbooks and recipe cards was the first thing packed.
People have mentioned that they keep their recipes in their head. Most things i cook are from my head but that is not to say that I don't get creative by adding something to an old stand by from a recipe I read on line today.I read recipe blogs and cookbooks like other people read novels.

I throw them in a drawer. I guess subconsciously I rebel at organization.
