I give pretty, but serviceable, dish towles and cloths--who can't use those after a party? Lint free dish towels are a treat too!  Also, I've given Williams-Sonoma's dish washing liquid--pretty and the scents are wonderful.

I've made up baskets of breakfast for the next day-a nice coffee, a couple of muffins, sometimes a little crossword book, tea, small jams and breads, etc.  Fancy salts are nice, a pepper grinder and pepper, hot cocoa mix, etc.

Love the dish towel idea especially! I often give a gift of a small decorative basket filled with high end dish towels tied with ribbons for the season at hand. I actually keep one or two made up and handy to use at a moments notice. I have a weakness for nice dish towels. And nice soaps tucked in make it even nicer. 

Even people who don't cook much or eat at home much need a dish towel now and then, and there are so many beautiful ones for each season now, and the high end ones are going to last for a very long time.

Only other thought on the plant, be careful of what pets they may have, they need to leave the plants alone.

If you bake, how about a banana bread.  That is always a hit when I make it.  Or cookies.

I take a pretty house plant, note cards, a pleasant Yankee Candle, or seasonal items.
