Are Hatch Chiles hot? Saw them at the store but know nothing about them.

Probably too hot for me. I don't want an ulcer.

hot-vi.gif  No, I don't.  LOL

@SharkE

They are not hot... they just give this amazing flavor.

@Hopein24 Hatch Chile is grown in the area around Hatch, New Mexico. The seeds, the soil, and the climate result in these special chiles. These can vary in heat level. I only purchase the mild. They are labeled at grocers by heat levels. Removing the seeds makes them even milder.

The taste is distinct. Once you have had a Hatch Chile, none other will ever be as enjoyable. The roasting brings out the flavor. I do enjoy them fresh, but that is a different experience.

When I went to the grocer's on Sat, they had some already roasted that morning and put in small plastic box containers to purchase and the containers were labeled either mild, hot or extreme hot.  I purchased (2) containers of the hot, after cleaning off the skin and removing some of the seeds I sealed them in a ziplock bag to freeze.  Had some for lunch and dinner, so good!😊

Love, love, love Hatch chiles and a local garden center where I live drives a truck to Hatch NM each year and bring back a load they roast and sell. They smell soooo good roasting. They're excellent and are available at four heat levels. They had a chile festival Saturday and sold delicious homemade green chile and gave out the recipe.

In answer to your question, "Are the hot?" - they are available here at 4 different heat levels, mild to knock your socks off hot.

Those available at your store could have been at various heat levels. Ask a produce section employee. Perhaps he/she would let you try one.

Are Hatch chiles hot? They can vary from very mild (think practically like bell peppers) to very hot. When they're for sale, the merchant usually identifies the heat level of the peppers being sold. As I mentioned in another post, a garden center where I live brings a truck load of Hatch chiles to their store in Kansas every fall and roasts them. Their Hatch chiles are at one of four heat levels. They have a unique and delicious taste. Last Saturday they were giving out samples of their Pork Green Chile and it was delicious. They used mild Hatch chiles in the chile.

"Any rumors you may have heard about spicy foods causing ulcers aren't true. Spicy foods themselves don't cause ulcers. In fact, they actually help prevent them by stopping the growth of the bacteria H. pylori, which causes them, according to a laboratory study."

Hatch chile peppers are available at various heat levels. The mildest ones are really no hotter than bell peppers and they have a wonderful flavor.

If you're peeling the roasted chiles and removing the seeds, please remember to wear gloves.

And don't rub your eyes! Woman LOL

We no longer use enough to stock the freezer every year, so we rely on smaller quantities like this:
