Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

The Save-a-Lot store here in my area of southern WV, is mainly popular with shoppers watching their expenses, who stretch their budgets with off brand products.  I personally don't like the looks of their meat, but because the store is located in an area with easy access, and is never super busy, I will run in for bread, milk, or sale items.   When I helped with food drives at the hospital, most of the canned food donated came from this store.

I wouldn't buy any meat there. Looks like the stuff they had yrs. ago when they did that story on 20/20 with Food Lion. I may pay more, but, I stick with pricey stores. My health is more important then saving a nickel.

Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

There's a Save A Lot about six miles from here but I've never been.  I thought they were supposed to be a low-priced, no-frills, limited selection supermarket.  That's how their parent, SuperValu, positions them.

Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

I mainly shop Kroger's & Aldis. But I have shopped at Sav A Lot and there are certain items I pick up. They have a brand of american cheese that to me is almost as good as deli american. It is Coburn brand. You have to make sure to get the unwrapped slices The individually wrapped of the same brand is not as good. I usually buy some 'steak ums' (not health food but DH loves them) & they are lower in cost than anywhere I have found. The ones I shop have good meat and produce. They supply the grocery bags but you have to bag them yourself.

Our city was very glad to have a few move into the urban food desert areas that had major chains abandon the neighborhoods and only had quickie markets for residents without transportation had to make very limited nutritional choices at.

Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

Save A Lot must customize their stores to suit the area. The one I occaisionally shop, has quite a few Mexican items and very inexpensive produce, most of it quite good. They also have a Mexican cafe/take out with some good items. I shop there for produce and Mexican food items.

Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

I love Save A Lot.  The meat is awesome.  Always fresh and ours has a meat cutter. The milk does not keep as well as other brands.  I have had  good things and bad.

Bring your own bags or you can use their boxes to carry your food out.  Their bags are a dime and you can reuse t hem.

Re: Has anyone shopped Save A-Lot

I've never found Save-A-Lot an enjoyable place to shop. Their prices are cheaper because their packaging comes smaller. That's the huge thing I found at my local store. I guess it would be a good place to shop if it were just for you. I would never buy my meat there.
