 MARKET INTEL | AUG 30, 2024

USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) reported record retail beef prices for the month of July 2024, with the all fresh value of beef estimated at $8.15 per pound (Figure 1). This marks the first time in history the national average price for all fresh beef moved above $8.

Consumers across the country are asking, “Why is beef so expensive?” The answer to this question has been several years in the making...

I paid $3.39 a pound for 80/20 ground beef last week at my local Acme. It was on sale and is usually around $5-$6 a pound.

I wanted to mention this to you @gardenman . Don't know if you use Acme for your prescriptions. BUT my husband was picking up a prescription yesterday at Acme. He was using Good RX. The Pharmacist said she wanted to check something. She looked it up and she said that the Acme plan would save him $2 over what he was paying with Good RX.

And I also bought the ground beef last week at Acme. I like their ground beef.

Ground beef sells between $6 and $8 a pound here in PA.  I buy it in 10 lb quantities and have enough in my freezer to last for awhile.  Beef is high right now everywhere.

My local farm stands charge crazy prices for fruits and veggies...no tariffs involved.

A dozen ears of corn cost $8.

I paid $21.50 for 5 peaches, a quart of plums, that I had to throw out ( too mushy to eat and not sweet at all) and 6 small choco chip cookies.

I am fortunate to have a  neighbor who helps his elderly father on his farm.  I get eggs, corn, tomatoes, zucchini and peppers free and he delivers them to my door.

We get a quarter of a beef every year from a local ranch.  Grass fed, organic.  Wonderful!  Looking forward to getting ours soon.

Around here you can it from the Grocery Outlet (if you dare) or up to knowing the family who raised it and then have it ground to your specifications.  Prices can be all over.

I am in southern WV and IGA has the family pack of ground beef for $4.48 lb (usually 3-5 lb packs).   Ground chuck is priced at $4.78 lb.

We pay roughly $17 per pound, but buy from regenerative farms that do not inject poison vaccines into their animals and do not overcrowd their herds. Farming like it used to be, healthy animals, healthy meats.
