There are insects called "drain flies".   They sell liquids to get rid of those on Amazon.  They have enzymes to dissolve debris that sometimes forms in drains, particularly those that aren't used often.

You are so right about the all kinds of stuff @LizzieInSRQ.  I've also found it to be an effective insect killer!  Seems once the foam entraps the insect (mostly used on ants but also an occasional fly or spider) they quickly succumb.

What is good for the goose today will also be good for the gander tomorrow.

Re: Gnats in the garbage disposer

I "think" it has something to do with the WEATHER.     I get HUGE clouds of those gnat things in my back yard.    Can't go out there without swallowing a mouth full of them.      Then...a couple days later, they are all gone...

Re: Gnats in the garbage disposer

We had them everywhere a couple years ago and I read  they lay eggs in the drain and that's and best way to kill the eggs before they hatch is every couple of days pour a pan of boiling water into the drain to kill eggs before they hatch. First I was pouring bleach in the drain to get rid of them but bleach didn't work but boiling water did work. Do like every other or everyday. Good luck. Believe me I know how annoying there were.

Drain Flies would be my vote too.  They just love all the gunk way down

there (and down shower drains) and it is the gunk that is the problem.

They sell cleaners or a plumber can do the job.  If you are on septic, be very cautious what you use.

I don't know about this dilemma @SharkE  but I would find it best

to keep your doors shut always and/or caulk or seal your windows.

Whenever I have people over and they keep the door open but for a few seconds the gnats are in! (this sounds like an infestation but I doubt it).  Keep all windows and doors shut forever. lol.

They are nasty.

Re: Gnats in the garbage disposer

I cured the problem by taking out that spongey thing scrubbing it good and even went down to the blade and with a bristle brush scrubbed it out good. Spotless now, but, who would have thought out of all household duties one has to  even clean the garbage disposer !

sheesh.........
