Following our previous discussion here is more - from Consumer Reports; "How to Clean Practically Anything." (The numbering is mine.)
Garbage Disposal Units
1. To avoid buildup, grind only small amounts at a time; run the unit whenever you put waste in it.
2. Periodically leave it on for a few extra moments so the grinding totally empties it. (Always run water while the disposal unit is turned on.)
3. Most manufacturerers suggest allowing the unit to run for 20-60 seconds after audible grinding is finished.
4. Break up grease deposits by occasionally grinding ice cubes, fruit pits, or small chicken bones.
5. Deodorize by pouiring 1/2 cup of baking soda into a sink filled halfway with water, turn on the disposal, and pull up the stopper.
6. Or grind citrus peelings.
