I recently had a real problem with fruit flies. I tried to keep the sink clear and no food out. Anyway, the problem just got worse, so I headed to Amazon looking for help. I found a product called STEM, and it was small, easy to use and safe to leave open. It took a week , but the problem was solved. It gives off a vinegar odor, but , you just shake it up once a day and the flies crawl all over it. When I find a good product , I like to pass it along.

@QVCkitty1 Thanks for the recommendation! But, I'm trying to figure out why you have fruit flies in the first place. That's very interesting.
I usually see them when I have picked tomatoes and have them sitting on the counter. Or, if I have peaches ripening on the dining room table, or ground cherries waiting to be husked.
Why are they invading your kitchen? Hmmm... "is a puzzlement!"

Could have been fungus gnats, not fruit flies.

I am willing to bet that fruit flies and other things are increasing because of organic farming. Farmers don't just spray this stuff to spend money--it is very expensive.
Nothing is without consequences.

I'm glad you found a solution. I wish it was that easy to get rid of the Phorid Flies we get in SE PA from the mushroom farms. Some people have them covering their ceilings! They are small and get in through any crevice. It's maddening because the chemical that used to be used to control at the source, was banned a few years ago.

@Imaoldhippie , I hope it works for you. Just remember to keep the cap so you can shake it daily.

This is also the time of year for nasty drain flies. The gnat-like things lay their eggs in the stagnant drain water of your sinks. I use salt OR squirt peroxide in my sink drains at night.
