OMG! - DH and I have mashed potatoes at least twice a week (as a side dish) with dinner.
I've tried the frozen and refrigerated ones, but just couldn't stomach them - They taste "plastic" to me (LOL).
It takes me no time to peel, boil and whip up a batch from scratch - With lots of butter, sour cream and sometimes garlic. ![]()

I too buy Idahoan instant mashed potatoes. Now that I'm a singleton, I get the individual serving cups that take 90 seconds to microwave. Available in Buttery Homestyle, Garlic, Four Cheese, and Loaded. Even more flavors in the pouches.

I always wanted to try that but then looked at the ingredients and thought maybe not but they look so good! I may have to try them
I love mashed potatoes and don't understand people who don't lol!
There are Bob Evans Original and Sour Cream & Chives, we prefer the sour cream ones. I really don't notice the chives much at all but they have a good rounded flavor ![]()

This thread just reminded me of an "emergency fix" for a holiday dinner years ago.
Not sure if it was not enough potatoes or more people than expected, but someone opened a can of yams or sweet potatoes, added butter and some brown sugar and mashed them.
They were excellent.

I'll eat the refrigrated ones if it's just me and I really want mashed potatoes with something. Otherwise, I'll make them from scratch. The worst part is the peeling. I just have to make sure I have buttermilk on hand.

I don't think it's a lot of work to make mashed potatoes. I always make them when I make meatloaf, because one meatloaf gives us several meals. The Bob Evans ones are nice if you don't want to refrigerate a lot of leftovers.

I've also done that and for those who like marshmallows on them, I add those to.

No haven't tried frozen/fresh store mashed spuds. I still make mine from scratch-- but-- I micro the spuds and scoop out the flesh-- DD doesn't eat dairy so make them with oatmilk and her margarine. and are very good!! The oatmilk is the key. I did--however--on a moment of weakness--buy ready- made 4 cheese mac-n-cheese by Resers----OMG--was that good!!!!!! Don't make that ever due to the above --no good sub for using real cheese----

I love mashed potatoes but have never purchased already-made ones, as I'm pretty sure mine are better. ![]()
What I do, since it's a lot of work especially since I hand-mash mine, is when a 5# bag of russets is on sale I snag one of those and just make a big batch, using the whole bag.
Then I portion them out in about 3 serving bits that I put into L&L and freeze. Each 5# bag makes 12-14 servings for me. Then I pop them out of the containers (it's a process!
) and vac-seal each one. When I want them I thaw one out and make a plan for the next 3 main meals. If I didn't love them as much as I do, I would probably freeze them in one or two serving bits.
HELPFUL HINT: Take the frozen mashers out of the vac-seal bag right away and put them back into one of those L&L containers to thaw. Otherwise, it would be messy and more hassle, especially if you like to re-use vac-seal bags (not ones that had raw meat in them of course). It's very easy to clean the L&L container that way and no mess.
The only time I tried frozen ones were in one of those frozen dinners from a national restaurant, the name of which I can't recall right now, and they were supposed to be some specialty of that restaurant. Well, it tasted like potatoes and water, so I never did that again. I'm spoiled by mine because I love to make sure that everything I make has a lot of flavor. ![]()

I thought OreIda bag of steamed mashed potatoes was no longer available.
Are you saying they still sell it your grocery store?
Yes.
