I have too much non fat milk and I don't want to waste it. Can I freeze it and what would be the best way to do it?

TIA

From Reader's Digest:

Can you freeze milk?

Yes, milk can last for several months in the freezer, but for the best quality, we advise consuming it within the first month. After that point, milk will begin to separate and turn grainy.

Because freezing changes the texture of milk, most people prefer to cook with thawed milk instead of drink it. Thawed milk works well in baked goods, like this classic hot milk cake recipe, and even in the perfect roast chicken.

Be sure to leave room for expansion.

Thaw in the fridge over night.

I'm not sure if you have any old-fashioned ice cube trays. I got rid of mine a few years ago. But, this would be a great way to freeze milk. After the cubes are frozen, transfer them to a Ziploc freezer bag.

Also, I have frozen cider in Ziploc bags. They store nice and flat in the freezer.  I would measure them out in one cup portions and label them with a Sharpie.

I waste very little food, especially since I am trying not to buy groceries until I have to.

I use nothing but non-fat milk.  When I go on vacation I just stick the carton in the freezer.  Take it out and use it as soon as I return.

I drink fat free milk and freeze it all the time, in small containers.  I let it thaw and shake well before drinking or use in cooking.

@candys mine

Each Halloween I make a batch of Caramel Apple Sangria that uses two cups of cider. This past year, I had to cancel my Halloween pit party due to the weather, and ended up with so much left over cider. Later on, one of my friends was happy to take the sangria home and I was left with the better part of the apple cider jug. This type of cider is mostly seasonal, so I froze most of the remainder in a gallon Ziploc freezer bag!

@Kachina624, if you buy organic fat-free milk it'll most likely still be good just leaving it in the fridge.  Used to buy regular fat free and it spoiled quickly; so after I switched to the organic, it lasts and lasts, so in the long run it's less costly.

Normally if I have milk that has reached the sell by date, I spill it out.

I know it's still good but once I see the date, no it isn't and it doesn't taste right anymore.

The last container I had like that I poured it into ice cube trays and froze it for just in case.  I popped them out and put them into a zip lock bag.  It's been fine to use in tea or coffee.

We all have our mental quirks.  I personally have no problem with milk that has just expired, tastes fine to me.  Lactose free I hate, Bought some to try and gave it to DH for cereal.
