Speaking from an environmental standpoint, not food, US regulations are very stringent. They will not lessen no matter how big or powerful the lobby groups are.
I don't share your optimism. Whether we are speaking of the environment or we are speaking of food or we are talking about any health and safety issue, there is a strident call from one part of the political spectrum that has recently advanced in numbers to weaken or even gut many such regulations.
Whether this is pure ideology or whether it's a cozy relationship with business is irrelevant.
That's a cycle that we see every time there is a new president or when the Democrats win over the Republicans and vis a versa.
Environmental regulations remain stringent.

I know this topic has been beat to death, but let me say you shouldn't eat food that's been grown or produced in China. They have no (or very little) FDA or regulatory oversight. ... Probably because they have a hard enough time feeding their growing population without imposing restrictions. On the other hand, food grown or produced in the US by Chinese-owned companies is probably okay. Having said that, it's often difficult to determine the source of food, especially processed foods that may source ingredients from all over the world.

It's not exactly a secret that there is a distinct difference between the two parties when it comes to regulatory issues of any kind, whether it relates to the environment or whether it relates to regulatory oversight of business and financial markets. That's indisputable.
The only saving grace is that environmental groups are very visible and very vocal.
