Food Network Star - 2016 - *SPOILERS*

[ Edited ]

Is anybody watching this pre-season piece?   What they did was to bring back a handful of contestants from several of the previous seasons.

They all compete and ONE of the is supposed to end up winning this, and then the new season will begin and the winner of this will get to compete in the new season.

The first thing I noticed, in the promos, was that Penny was coming back.  Groan!  I thought 'oh joy, more of that'.  BUT THEN - this guy Matthew is also back.

You may remember him as this nauseating, smirking, little jerkwad who not only fancied himself better than everybody else, but can't seem to stop himself from telling everybody else how bad they are.  No sportsmanship.  No class.  No maturity.

He reminds me of that smirky Pharma Boy dude - always with this condescending smirk.   He sure makes Penny a pleasure to watch and I thought she was going to be what made me turn away!

If he wins this and goes on to compete in the new season of FNS, I think I might just be out.  (fingers crossed)    I hate to wish anybody any kind of ill-will but he is just so awful!

Re: Food Network Star - New Season 2016

@chickenbutt I watched it, and the thing at got me was that none of them had changed much, the ones who froze on camera, etc, still did..

The two you mentioned of course are the two I thought were the worst as well..Matthew didn't seem QUITE as bad as I remembered, and Penny, well, she is a few years older, with maybe a tiny bit more insight...after watching Matthew last night, it is clear he doesn't report to normal social interpersonal "cues" making me wonder if he might have some problems in that area...like maybe somewhere on the autism spectrum....

anyway, it's a pretty clever gimmick...I watched it....Valerie and Tyler seem a lot more forgiving than Giada and Bobby...

Re: Food Network Star - New Season 2016

I'm just watching last night's episode now.  Fingers crossed but I imagine they keep him around for a while for the drama (gack!).

I agree that Penny doesn't seem so bad.  I like Dom and the other ladies.  I cannot remember everybody's name yet.

You know, I just like nice people.  I like people who have sportsmanship and maturity.  People who act like total jerks are the ones I just cannot tolerate.  I know that others love the drama, so I'm in the minority.    But I wouldn't have called that guy back to re-compete in a million years.

Plus, the guy talks in 'hashtags' and that is annoying as heck.

Re: Food Network Star - New Season 2016

I also watched and was less than impressed. It seems like FN is heavy of "retreds" of people who gained some camera experience and want to grab another few minutes of "fame."

Last season's NFNS was a real "bust" to me with a lot of gimmicks and very little real cooking  Harkening back to the earlier seasons when Guy Fieri,  Melissa D'Arabian and even Demaris Phillips competed, at least there was some great cooking and less of the ridiculous "theatrics."

Also, Giada DeLaurentis' attire last season was inappropriate to the extreme and that further detracted from the essence of what the show is supposedly intended to promote.

I noticed that the winners of the last few seasons didn't even get a show of their own.  I think I saw last season's winner, Eddie Jackson, promoed as host of some kids BBQ show but nothing that highlighted his cooking skills....maybe intentionally.

I know there are 2 contestants that I like.....2 of the contestants on the upcoming show are the winner and runner up (Erin and Damiano) on the Holiday Baking show the was on last fall (IIRC)3.  I liked both of them, and they were good on camera.  If they can cook savory as well as they bake and if they can present info on camera as well as they can casually chat on camera, they might be contenders.

Re:  end of last night's episode -

Spoiler
Wo, I didn't see that coming!  I thought Penny was doing pretty decent and definitely better than some.  No, I've NEVER belonged to the Penny Fan Club, but I didn't expect to see her get the boot.

I guess we get to keep on seeing Smirky McJerkerson for a while.  Smiley Sad

Re: Food Network Star - New Season 2016

I watched it last Sunday.  Last night was a repeat.  I don't know why, but I will watch it.  I wish they would put these winners in prime time instead of Sunday at 8am or Tuesday at 11pm.  They really could use some decent shows on that network.

Re: Food Network Star - New Season 2016

Last night was an original episode.  It was the second episode of this short series ('Comeback Kitchen') that precedes the next full season. It was on at 8pm here, in Pacific Time, so YMMV.  Smiley Happy

The new full season will begin right after a winner is chosen from this, I believe.
