I find it interesting that BPA inside cans and the inside of bottle tops is white... which causes it to appear as somehow clean and safe.

Mayoclinic.org states:

if you're concerned about BPA, you can take these steps to reduce your exposure:

  • Seek out BPA-free products. More and more BPA-free products have come to market. Look for products labeled as BPA-free. If a product isn't labeled, keep in mind that some, but not all, plastics marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.
  • Cut back on cans. Reduce your use of canned foods since most cans are lined with BPA-containing resin.
  • Avoid heat. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, advises against microwaving polycarbonate plastics or putting them in the dishwasher, because the plastic may break down over time and allow BPA to leach into foods.
  • Use alternatives. Use glass, porcelain or stainless steel containers for hot foods and liquids instead of plastic containers. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-living/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/bpa/faq-2005833...

If you are as old as I am, perhaps you remember that we never had expiration dates on cans..that's a relatively new thing. Back then--you really had no way of knowing how old a canned item was. I work at a food pantry also--we can give out everything and anything that is past it's "due date"--except baby food. Or--if an item says "expires by" we will have to go by that date. But it's really a judgement call. The manufacturers feel the food is best if used by then, but that doesn't matter. Everyone has to decide for themselves if a food item is still good tasting--even after the date on the item

Prior to cans of food and other foods being dated, we would only keep food for one year and throw it away after that. This included any home canning that we did as well as frozen food.

Of course, I am not asking anyone to respond, but I would find it interesting to know of those who consume canned goods and more specifically, consume canned goods beyond the expiration date, how many are on medications.

Seaside shopper I will say I started this thread and I take many Medications for my Heart from a recent HA and I'm Type2 Diabetic. Why do you ask this question?

Katey, I am aware that you started this discussion and am sorry to read of your health concerns. In answer to your question, I am interested in the correlation (if any) between type 2 diabetes/heart disease/various other new diseases such as lupus, fibromyalgia, and Bisphenol A (BPA).

I see and agree with you. I worry a lot more about things I eat than before my health issues. I'm definitely trying to be more mindful and wish I had started before my health issues started. My Mother passed away at 42 of a massive heart attack and my Dad had open heart bypass surgery and developed non insulin diabetes. My Mothers Mother was diabetic and took insulin daily. Even though I knew all of this until it hit me I ate whatever I wanted. Now I have to make huge healthy choices to stay alive and well.

There is a doctor that whose work I am particularly fond of, and who makes making healthy choices easy (IMO)... he is Julian Whitaker, M.D. He wrote a book copyrighted in 1994 that I have has since then entitled, Dr. Whitaker's Guide to Natural Healing. He has also written on Reversing Diabetes, Reversing Heart Disease, among other topics (see: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=julian+whitaker%2C+m.d. ) Dr. Whitaker also has a website (drwhitaker.com) and a Wellness Institute in SoCal. You may wish to take a look and see what you think.

I throw anything away that is expired. My brain will not let me use something that is expired. If I knew it was expired, my brain would remember, and when I go to eat the expired my brain would make me feel sick.

jeanhelen

I must be as old as you because I remember not having expiration dates on anything also. We just used common sense as others have posted here. If I have a can of something that is past the date, I also smell & taste before I use it in a recipe

As I posted here yesterday: Of course, I am not asking anyone to respond, but I would find it interesting to know of those who consume canned goods and more specifically, consume canned goods beyond the expiration date, how many are on medications.

So, what do YOU think??
