Re: Does a Rice Cooker Really Make Rice Fluffy?

I have a cheap old Proctor Silex one, had it for many years and use it at least once a week. I would love a newer one when I get around to it, so I would certainly buy another one and could not do with out it!

It is great to have it doing its own thing while I am getting the rest of dinner together, or helping my kids with homework. Mine makes fluffy rice. I usually use Jasmine rice and I use a little less water or broth(what I usually use) than called for and the rice comes out more fluffy. I will add chopped veggies and herbs/seasonings at times too. It works great also on rice mixes that come in a box/envelope for a quick side...love taco/Spanish rice when we have tacos.

I've had a Zojirushi for years and it makes great rice. The keep warm setting is a huge benefit too.

I have a similar type rice cooker (fuzzy logic), we love it. We use it all the time, and in our opinion, it does make better rice.

We don't consider it a "gadget."

I agree! Sure you can make a pot of rice on the stove. But you can't walk away and forget about it until dinner is done, or delay dinner and have it still warm, perfect and waiting an hour later.

We have a Zo fuzzy logic and a little WP 1.5 cup one we use sometimes for a quick one-shot meal.

What you talking about, my friends? Smiley Happy

I've always cooked rice in a pot with a lid. The only (kind of) watching is for the water to boil so I could put the rice and a pinch of salt in. Cover it up. Turn it down. Set the timer. Come back when it rings. Bam, done - perfect every time.

But I have to say - I actually have an old (like REALLY old!) rice cooker that was given to me. This is from way before the kind of technology they have now. I used it a few times, years ago, but in this old one it always ended up with the bottom part all stuck to the pan. It came out, of course, but you lost a lot of rice in the process. I imagine the ones from current times don't do that.

No! The new ones keep it nice, fluffy and hot and not burned on the bottom for hours. We like stir fry dishes a LOT so I can come home, put the rice on, change clothes, chop veggies, put a load of clothes in the washer, chop up all the veggies for the stir fry, wait for hubby to come home, do the stir fry, and then dish up the rice. I can do all that and never give a thought to the rice.

To me that's simply a miracle! We also eat rice as a side dish, hubby likes it with chili (his momma ain't from around here and they put beans in chili).

Re: Does a Rice Cooker Really Make Rice Fluffy?

Hey Sooner! Glad to hear they make them better now.

I usually have a little white rice in the freezer (in case the dog has tummy problems) and a larger L&L full of brown rice in there (for me).

I really enjoy rice. I've been mildly concerned about the whole arsenic thing, but I try to buy California brown rice and - well, I'm not dead yet! Smiley Happy

Happy day!

PS: About the beans - Hey, I resemble that remark.

Re: Does a Rice Cooker Really Make Rice Fluffy?

I love my rice cooker. You can buy a simple one, with one press and go setting, or something with more options. Mine is an Aroma rice cooker which comes with a steamer tray and settings for white rice, brown rice, saute-than-simmer, and a delay timer. As I type this, I have brown rice in the cooker on a delay timer and the rice will be perfectly cooked and set to warm when I get home tonight. I can steam fish, veggies, or chicken in the steaming tray or make soup in the cooker. I can saute items before turning it on cook mode, too. The Aroma website has over 200 recipes that can be made using a rice cooker, from cake and oatmeal to chili or chicken.

Whether or not the rice comes out fluffy depends on following directions, but rice comes out consistently. I add rice, water, and salt and my rice doesn't stick to the inside. Once I scoop the rice out, I can easily hand wash the pot or put it in the dishwasher. I grew up with a rice cooker and have always found it to be a valuable appliance.

Re: Does a Rice Cooker Really Make Rice Fluffy?

I love my inexpensive rice cooker! I only have 4 stove burners, so I really really appreciate having this pot cook rice on the counter, not taking up a burner. Mine is an 8 cup capacity, aluminum inner removable vessel, with cook and warm settings, called Elite probably from Walmart. I normally measure 3C rice, 4.5C water or chicken broth, set it to "cook" and the pot steams away freeing me to do other things, and when its done it pops up to "warm" and stays that way until I want it. Normally, rice doesn't stick but if it does, a little water in the pot while we eat and its loosened enough to hand wash easily and completely. If this little pot ever stops working I will definitely buy another one just like it. While it was inexpensive, I totally find it Quality, Valuable, and Convenient Wink{#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Remarkable isn't it! YOU use beans in chili and I use canned soup! And we're STILL friends! {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

I like Jasmin rice and make it in a rice cooker. The rice tastes and smells different, better by a lot, from the same rice made in a pot on the stove. It's magic.

I don't have one but I asked my son to bring his over one time when I was making shrimp creole for a crowd. It was really nice and the rice turned out perfect!
