Does Anyone Do Creamed Onions Any More?

I just happened to think of creamed onions.

I always spent the weekend in town with my Victorian grandmother and grandfather.

On Sunday afternoon, we went to a wonderful resturant.  I remember picking out vegetables that came in little glass bowls.  I loved creamed onions!

I never think to do them!

@ECBG - What, exactly, are creamed onions?  I understand raw onions and cooked onions and even fried onions, but what is the purpose for creamed onions?  Do you put them into soup?  Do you dip pieces of bread into it?  I have never heard of creamed onions.

Love that dish but haven't had in 30 years or more.  I'm a simple 'cook' - did have boiled dinner with onions last night = love those too.

Never met an onion I didn't like !!

I remember way back to the 1960s my aunt & uncle would serve creamed onions (which I never ate) as one of the sides for Thanksgiving dinner.

Oooooo I haven't thought about them in ages!

Pearl onions (cocktail onion size) in a cream sauce.

A seasoned white sauce is made.  The small drained cocktail onions are well drained and added, I believe.  I haven't seen onions that small in a grocery store.  I loved them, but love onions in general.  Hot onions can be "mellowed" out by putting pieces in vinegar water.

my mother used to make them at thanksgiving, and i hadn't thought of them in a long time, but a few years ago, i made them to have with our thanksgiving, but i'm afraid there was way too much other food and they were hardly touched.  they were good though.

Two side dishes my mom always made for our big Christmas Day dinner in the 50's thru mid 70's were creamed onions and escolloped oysters. I disliked both.....typical teen....

Had an uncle, a physician, who loved the oysters, but he was too fugal to allow his wife to buy them, so always looked forward to my mom's dinner. 😉. Still have my mom's recipes for both dishes, but I've never made them myself.

My mother prepared them with every Christmas dinner.  Helping her prepare them was a nightmare.  Onions are so strong in December, I'd peel, cut and cry a river.  I wasn't that crazy about eating them and I hated preparing them.  She used big, white onions, no pearl onions.
