I initially started cleaning the eggs when we got the bird, having done a lot of homework and learning a lot about how their little systems are so profoundly different than those of us mammals.
But I also have an auto-immune condition and probably have to be more careful than many people. So, something that would not be even a blip on the screen for many people would make me sick and, even worse, could kill the bird.
Fact of the matter is, the outside of eggs (no matter where you buy them) are quite filthy. But this would not have any effect whatsoever on most healthy adults. It's not the same for everybody (or everybirdy. heh), however.
Chickenbutt-GREAT point. And I was just thinking this. The very young, the very old, the infirm, the ill, those with auto-immune disorders, etc., would be most at risk of any effects from contamination.

I never gave it a thought. BUT....now that it's a discussion, it will be stuck in my head and brings a thought to mind. I never buy a dozen eggs without running my fingers over each one to ensure that they have not cracked and stuck to carton. Light bulb suddenly goes off......I'm certainly not the only one doing this check.....and.....where have everyone's hands been???

Me too, Krimpette, I don't eat the shell, so why should I be washing it, LOL!

I take the eggs out of the store carton, rinse each of them carefully with cold water, dry them on paper towels, put them in the clean plastic egg container in our refrigerator and then recycle the store carton. I also rinse off bananas and dry them with paper towels...

If someone by the name of Chickenbutt says ".....the outside of eggs....are quite filthy". I'm going to take their word for it.
I for one would not eat an egg for all the money in the world *bleck*, but I will start washing them for my loved ones.

I check them in the store also metrogal. There have been times when I've had to go through 6 or 7 cartons before I find one in which all the eggs are uncracked and not stuck to the carton. I don't wash them either but then I've never given a thought to how many peoples hands have touched my eggs.
