Do you wash eggs before using them? With what?

I just read about this on another thread, but I've never heard of it before. Eggs are cleaned at the packing house when they are candled for imperfections. Should I be doing something else before I crack them open?

I've lived many years, now into my senior years. Never washed an egg in my life.

I do because I have a bird, so I just got used to doing it when preparing food for him. They are actually quite filthy on the outside and when you crack them open it exposes the part you use to the filth on the outside.

I use GSE.

I suppose everybody should do whatever works for them, though, so I'm not trying to push anything. Smiley Happy

The only time I would think of washing eggs, is if I got it directly from the farm or if one in the carton looked messy. Never thought about what I would wash it with, perhaps vinegar and water?

Never have washed an egg, but I look at mine before purchasing. I have seen eggs that are not clean.

I've never washed store bought, but farm eggs don't come very clean. I soak them in cold water and rinse. I then spray vegetable wash on them and rinse again. Dry on a towel before I put them in a carton. This is why I have L&L

I agree - when you break open an egg it doesn't touch the outside of the shell anyway.

Farm eggs - direct from the chicken must be washed because they poop as they lay them, so there is poop all over the egg.
