Not to start a fight here but - if you are their mother why do you allow them to do behavior that annoys you? isn't it your JOB to train them what is and is not acceptable behavior?
You know I don't think this topic is about parenting skills. I believe it's about eating out alone. I try to be humorous but I guess some people just don't get my humor!

Yes, I go out for breakfast on the weekend every week by myself, but I'm single and used to it. I will do dinner alone, occasionally, when I want to enjoy a meal I didn't have to cook and to avoid being stared at by my two dogs, as they lick their lips with hope in their eyes....the little beggars.

Only when I try to meet a man. Meeting a man in a restaurant will lead to a longer relationship than meeting one in a bar.

I've done it before with a book. Did not enjoy it.

Yes ... I've done it for years so it doesn't bother me. It started when I was working and continued now that I'm retired.
I have a male friend who finds it very uncomfortable ... just won't do it. No matter what I say to him - still haven't convinced him.

I hear ya! I have two sons who were little boys once and I believe you're doing your kids a favor by getting away from them once in a while. Kids generally act the worst when we put them in situations that they are not equipped to deal with. It's a lot to ask a 4 year old boy to behave like an adult in a restaurant. Nurture yourself so that you can nurture them.

Is this another question from the 1950's Ladies Home Journal?
Yes, I eat at a restaurant by myself. Often if it's my lunch hour from work I prefer it! Some days I can't take one more person talking to me.

I've dined solo many times, especially on vacation.
Maybe because I'm an only child I've never had an issue with travelling solo, or doing activities by myself. I'd love to have friends or a SO along sometimes but that's not always possible. Dining or doing other activities solo is better than doing nothing at all.

Having moved three times for progressive job promotions AND not married until I was 39, I had many nights out alone at the restaurant not being fond of cooking, either. I would go early to familiar locations and the wait staff knew me and would "take care" of me. I would bring a news magazine to read while the food was being cooked, and then I would enjoy my meal. When Mr. Lily came into the picture, he joined me at a Macaroni Grill in northern New Jersey and my favorite waitress told him to "take really good care of me" -- she was just great.

I haven't done it lately, but I used to do it all the time. I used to enjoy the time alone. There's no real reason why I haven't done it lately. I'll have to add it to the to do list.
