Re: Do you clean your own house?

I have a cleaning lady come every other week. When my son lived at home, I had someone come every week. I'm about a year or two away from retirement and occasionally wonder what I will do about cleaning once I retire. I suspect that I will have someone come in at least once a month. I currently pay $75. . .and it's worth every penny.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

Yes, I do. Having a difficult time finding a housekeeper (weekly) who will not use strong chemicals in shower, kitchen, etc.... I'm allergic to most. Any suggestions?

Re: Do you clean your own house?

I'm with those who don't want a stranger going through my things. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

My major jobs are washing/sweeping/vacuuming floors, cleaning the kitchen, cleaning the bathrooms, dusting/polishing furniture, changing the bed and doing laundry. I do one of those jobs a day, once a week, so I'm not spending a lot of time on them at once. Every day I do a quick vacuuming (for pet hair), wipe down the kitchen counters and sink, and tidy up. Then every other month I shampoo the rugs, cleans the baseboards, and the blinds and windows. If you break it up like that (and keep up with it), it's easily manageable - especially if you live alone.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

I still do my own cleaning. DH and I are older than dirt, but we don't like dirt and try to keep it out of our lives. He is a wonderful helper. I try to do one major room every day. Bathrooms (4 1/2) I do on Saturdays. We each have a separate office, and I don't touch his, nor does he touch mine (though a good fire would clean my effectively). His remains spotless. It's just the two of us, so we keep things picked up and neat naturally.

I guess I'm one of those who doesn't iike anyone moving my things around, and I don't like to be at home when someone else is "cleaning". We also have a pup who isn't thrilled with having strangers. When we have sleep in guests, I have a daughter who insists on coming in to help me with changing sheets, cleaning, etc. to get ready for them. But that's all the help we get and all we want for now.

Re: Do you clean your own house?

I pay my cleaning womvan $60 every other week to clean my one bedroom condo. It's worth every penny to me. When I was growing up we had a cleaning woman five days a week. That was back when sheets got ironed.

That's true. I'm not comfortable with another person in the house and I would have to hide valubles everytime I knew they were coming. Just do it yourself , then, U don't have that to worry about. When times comes I can't I'll go to assisted living and would had sold off my pretties by then.

Since I retired I do it myself but I used to have a service clean once a week. If you use an insured/bonded service you are basically insured against any theft or other issues. I used a service for around 8 or 9 years and never felt uncomfortable having someone come into the home and I never had any theft or breakage problems. I would be very careful about having individuals not connected to an agency come into my home unless I had a lot of references from them ahead of time.

Yes I do. No one else has offered to do it. Actually we have a small ranch home so it's not a big deal.

My daughters both had housekeepers. They both got rid of them because they had to 'clean up' before the housekeepers came (they had to pick up the toys, etc).

Why? Because it used up the time when the housekeepers had to go around and clean up before they 'cleaned up'.

I need to find a good housekeeper. My problem is that I have so many personal business papers and numbers lying around, I can't find anyone I can really trust.

I remember when my kids were young and I had surgery and other health issues, we had help for a while. I did have to "clean up" before the cleaning person came. We never had them clean our office where our business papers, etc. are. One person did steal some items so I had to let her go. I don't know if I want to hassle the worry of that any more. I did have a service come in early this year, just to clean the exterior of my kitchen cabinets. (I can't reach and don't get on ladders.) Two ladies and they were only in the kitchen. I was happy with the work. Don't know if I would want someone to clean all rooms at this time. I have a lot of jewelry from QVC when gold was a good price, and would worry about that. Live in a nice area and gold chains are being stolen right off ladies' necks at shopping centers or when on walks.
