Re: Do You Make or Buy Salad Dressing?

Both.

Most of the time I use basil EVOO and a fruit balsamic vinegar from Seasons Taproom, and throw in a bit of S & P, a fennel seed or two, and/or maybe a sprinkle of another seasoning, like Stonehouse Napa Valley Blend.

I buy a blue cheese dressing for when I get head lettuce; and if I have a hard cooked egg in the salad, I like a Thousand Island. Never made these, though.

Here's one I just copied down to complement a kale salad (w/ fresh figs):

Lemon Poppy Seed

1/2 cup EVOO

2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar

2 tbsp. maple sryup

1 tbsp. lemon juice

1 tbsp. poppy seeds

1/2 tsp. pink Himalayan salt

1/2 tsp. ground mustard

I’m Italian and grew up on olive oil and salt and pepper. Sometimes I will use a lemon too.

@Malcontent I'm Welsh/German/ENglish/Austrian and I have come lately to love just a really good vinegar on geen salad (salt and fresh pepper given) sometimes.  Sherry or a thick cherry vinegar we have and I'm in salad heaven!  There are some great vinegars available now!

@Sooner  As much as I cook w/ sherry in this house, I've never used it in a salad. Must try some day!

@Harpa Sherry vinegar for salads.  I love it! Also, sometimes when we do a stir fry and make the sherry, ginger, soy sauce with corn starch to slightly glaze it at the end I use Harvey's Cream Sherry because it is sweet and replaces any sugar that you sometimes add.

Sherry in a glass is good!  And I do have sherry glasses!  And it's almost 5 o'clock! Cheers!

@Sooner  Thanks for the tip about the H. cream sherry! I always get the dry.

Yes, 5:00! Cheers to you, too, but I'm raising my last cup of green tea for the day!

Re: Do You Make or Buy Salad Dressing?

I buy mine which is usually HVR Cucumber Ranch (which is getting harder to find).  I will also make up one of the Good Seasons Pkts in Italian or Bold Italian (whatever it's called).

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, but Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

I love homemade salad dressings and have a lot of recipes. I'd say I make homemade about half the time.

But I noticed that bottled dressings are often lower in calories than my recipes for homemade. It's the amount of oil, I imagine. We do use bottled dressings, too.

DH's favorite is Olive Garden Italian Dressing. It's really good, and there's a light version as well as the original.

I like Ken's brand Creamy Caesar and Raspberry Walnut Vinaigrette.

I also like Target's Ranch Dressing, in the refrigerated section of the produce area.
