Do I need to blanch veggies before freezing?

I bought a huge bag of fresh brussel sprouts and want to freeze most of it. Not for long term.... I'll probably use them up within a few months.

All websites say to blanch before freezing. Do i have to? What is the benefit or risk of not blanching first?
