I have to give them kudos for marketing. Everything 'diet' will sell, but really, just use the smaller plates to your existing dinnerware sets if you want portion control. Many of us have been doing that for years, without investment in a separate set of dishes.

I will say, if you are tight on space, and like a smaller footprint, it is nice to see a choice in size for that reason.

Back in the day, (1960's and back) much of the dinnerware dinner plates were more in the 8-9 inch range. I collect vintage dinnerware, and the plates and bows are much smaller than what is offered in many sets today. Drinking glasses were the same, mostly a 12 oz size there. Probably another of the many reasons the majority of the population didn't have weight issues like today.

Why would it be silly? Using smaller makes all the sense in the world if you are trying to lose weight or even maintain it. Yes, you can just use a smaller plate you might have, but I don't see a reason that makes this "silly." Just another thing that might help someone with a problem; like makeup primer, daily pill boxes, single-serve coffee makers, cell phones, etc. etc.
