Decorating with Fondant video?

My Granddaughter and I like to bake together and she wants to make a cake using fondant. I have never used the stuff and was wondering if there are any You-tube videos or tips someone could recommend for a newbie?

We orderd a "kit" with tools on Amazon yesterday and she was so excited!

Any tips or tricks for this Gramma would be appreciated!

There are several on YouTube.

Wilton has different techniques on their website, if my link is removed just google "fondant decorating wilton" to see what they show as far as how to's.

You might warn her (so she's not disappointed) that a lot of people don't like the taste of fondant. My friend "does" cakes, and she always says that fondant is good to work with, but tastes bad, so people "peel back" the fondant to get to the cake.

You never know though, maybe she'll like it - eveything tastes better when it's made with grandmother and love! Woman Wink

Re: Decorating with Fondant video?

I took courses given by Wilton master bakers & I will tell you truthfully I have not mastered it!  I don't know your GD age but I'm sure you'll have fun!

Fondant is tricky! Really need to have good work environment -- cool and not a lot of humidity  to work with it and dries out quickly, IMO.

I have tried and tried -- the cakes are beautiful but take a lot of patience!

I am a pretty good cake decorator but  I still prefer a cake decorated with good buttercream or swiss meringue icing.  (Personally, I don't like the taste of fondant)

Good Luck!!!  Post pics of the cake and enjoy the special moments with your granddaughter!

Thanks!

we are going to keep it as simple as possible! She is only 8, but we have been baking together since she was 3 and she does pretty good!

@Nataliesgramma

My GD is 8 also & although we are separated by distance, her other grandmother bakes/cooks with her now she's older.

This weekend she learned to make yummy cinnamon rolls (making the yeast dough from scratch).

For christmas she gifted her with the best gift.  Kids cooking box every month and comes with fun recipes/cookbooks.  She 💗 it!!!

Have fun!!!

I have not found this to be true with all of the entertaining I have done over the years.  We have a family business and have "custom cakes" all the time baked by a famous baker who is the baker for a local university.  We love her fondant and told her the same comment you posted years ago when we placed our first order.  She told me to trust her that her fondant was different,  and it is.  Absolutely delicious and is always eaten at our events.  They always want to know who our baker is.  She's great.
