NOthing -- keep it clear. Also try to have countertops uncluttered with only a few necessaries sitting around. Easier to keep things clean.

I think this frequent debate depends on three things:  The height of your cabinets, the height of your ceiling, and the amount of space between the two.

 

I prefer the look of "nothing" above my cabinets.  They are nine feet high, the ceiling is ten feet, which leaves only one foot between the two.  I have above cabinet lighting, and I like the bare look when illuminated.

The same thing that's on top of our fridge. Cats. They love lying on their pillows above the cabinets. 

 

(It's really the cats' house. We just pay the mortgage. And they allow us to live there, so they have somebody to feed them and clean their litter boxes.)
