I think they look better bare. I’m not a fan of decorative items that are difficult to reach for frequent cleaning. The worst are fake plants. If I’m at someone’s house; I won’t be looking at the cabinet top decor, but the dust and cobwebs I imagine are on them. Yuck!

Technically, we don’t have this space as the top of our cabinets meet a soffit.  When we had a country kitchen we installed stained 1”x 8” planks on the underside of the soffits to create a long shelf that ran above the cabinets.  I kept assorted baskets, pottery, decorative plates, mason jars, and other mishmash up there.  It looked good when that was my decorating style.  That said, when we did a kitchen makeover all the planks were removed and the mishmash was dealt with.  Our kitchen looks so different now.

I have a plate rail with a set of 12 different floral lunch size plates with matching borders.  I like looking at each plate the florals - my favorites are the ones with roses, with tulips, with magolia, with pansies and with mums.  All match my kitchen colors and have a dark blue with small flowers borders.  I enjoy them.

Thank you ladies for the replies....looks overwhelmingly like most of you like the clean, uncluttered look. I think I will go for that also, it's such a  job cleaning the 'stuff' up there.

Nothing.  There's not much space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling.  My kitchen is small and I don't like a lot of "stuff" anyway.

I have 10 ft. ceilings and if I don't put stuff up there, it looks too barren.  It is a PITA to get up there and haul stuff down and dust it off.

I have nothing. Agree about being a dust collector not to mention food odors etc. I will say in my sisters prior house she displayed a village up there with a lot of lights at Christmas. I enjoyed looking st it. Nothing the rest of the year.
