I agree. Some of those photos look like too much of a balancing act! How fancy-shmancy would it be if someone's glass toppled to the floor! I would much rather "offend" someone by holding a wineglass "incorrectly" than be the one whose glass of red wine ruins a host's white carpet.
I know there's wine etiquette about this kind of thing, but I go to lots of black-tie events, Broadway opening parties, awards dinners for celebrities, things like that. People tend to hold wineglasses in a way that is comfortable and makes the glass feel secure in their hand. I see them held all sorts of ways, and I've never heard anyone (even in snobby crowds) make an issue of how someone holds their glass. I usually hold a wineglass by the stem, but if it feels more secure to hold it differently, then that's what I do.

You never hold the bowl of the glass because your hand will warm the wine. But he looks ridiculous holding it by the base. I suppose he thinks he's an expert like he does with everything.
I don't think David acts at all as though he's an expert on everything. He's one of the few hosts who actually asks the vendors questions, and seems genuinely interested in the answers. And he's one of the few hosts who let the vendors talk! I think it's clear that he's aware that they're the experts & that they're there to talk about the products - and he lets them do that.
He doesn't claim to know everything, and I've never seen him act as though he does.
