Back in the 70's during high school and college, I worked at Taco Bell. This is how we sliced the tomatoes before we cut them up.


I have to say it only works when the tomatoes are firm and not very ripe (like the ones you get in the grocery stores). They make mush out of a good ripe home grown tomato. And you have to "saw" your way through it. 


It also makes the slices too thin for what I want, often times.
