Yes. You put a quarter in the slot on the cart and it is released to you. When you return the cart and put the chain in the slot the quarter is returned to you. It is like a deposit. It is to encourage shoppers to return the carts and they do not have to have an employee do it. Where I shop, there are almost always carts just there in the corral, with quarters already in them. I have seen shoppers purposely putting them in as a kind gesture!
My Aldi is very nice and very neat and clean. They are a busy store and the items are very fresh. Mine has good produce. I do not buy everything there as they do not have the variety my Kroger has. They do carry all of the basics and some fun, limited availability items. For example, they have German week when certain items from Germany are featured. Sometimes they have potstickers and other Asian food.
They do not carry a lot of name brands, but if you purchase anything from them and do not like it they have a return guarantee.
Some fun seasonal merchandise too. Kitchen and home items. Sometimes clothing items. Plants and gardening items.
I like Aldi and go there weekly, mostly on Wednesdays when the new items are featured. Some things are sold out fast!

@CAcableGirl2 wrote:I shop at Aldi's every weekend. Hands down, they have the lowest prices for many items that I buy on a regular basis. The pita chips, golden raisins, big canister of oatmeal, all their cereals are just a few items that I save a lot of money on.
In my store, the produce is good, not great, but for the basics, you can't beat them. I've had great luck with their store brand, although I don't buy meat there, but get a lot of dairy, frozen items, and the basics (canned goods). The first few times I tried them, I couldn't believe all the food I purchased for so little money.
The chips and crackers are equal to name brands, at about 1/2 the price.
@CAcableGirl2 Did you ever notice they sell five types of Girl Scout cookies? The prices range from .97 - $1.29 per box and taste the same. Best part you can get them all year.

We do the majority of our shopping at Aldi. Since the pandemic we get it delivered. Our store has always been very good. Clean, well stocked, a lot of cashiers and they are very pleasant and quick. We love that the produce is fresh, and much cheaper. They often have items you don't see at other stores also. Once you get started shopping there, you will get hooked! The first time we went, DH said, this store is awful! Then, the second time he came around!

Love Aldi's! Guaranteed you will spend less money there than at the large grocery stores. Granted, they don't have a big variety of the same items, but what you do get is most often comparable to the name brands or better AND at a significantly lower price. The bulk of my weekly grocery shopping is now done in Aldi's. I save a lot of money by shopping there.

@felixmom One quarter to get a cart, put your grocieries that yes, you bagged yourself. Put the cart back for your one quarter.
It's a great idea to eliminate all those stray carts left by shoppers in the parking lots. This is an insane lazy act.
Aldi's - a wonderful store to shop at. It's German owned and brought to us here. Yes you'll find 'off' brands because many are of German decent. They always have seasonal wonderful offerings too as they celebrate many holidays.
Everything costs less there, and yes they're beginning to offer name brand items too, not that I buy many of them but they're there. Love Aldi's - it's a total no fuss no muss, no stupid stuff that MAKES you spend more than you intended like the super grocery stores do here.
AND don't forget to check out their WINE selections as well beers. They have many for varieties AND they're so much less at other stores.
Aldi's - you're missing out if you don't try this grocery store. A quarter for a cart, put it back and get your quarter back OR pass it on for free. Spread the Aldi's joy! Don't forget your own bags too and don't complain that you have to do this for yourself. Think of it this way, you can bag your own stuff the way you want it bagged.

I have been an Aldi queen for years. Son #1 and DDIL are Aldi fans as well. Fortunate to have a new store nearby.
Everything Dairy and Bread is so much better and less $$ than other markets. Good place to start. Great deals throughout.
Best chocolates EVER! Love their cookies, too.
As a single person I love that the stores are smaller, and not super-size supermarkets. Quick in and out.

@felixmom wrote:Isn't Aldi's the store where you pay for the shopping cart..something minimal like a quarter,,,,and you get it back when you check out?
Yes, the first and only time I was ever in there, that was the case. You also had to have yor own tote, and do your own bagging. When I go to the store I buy buggy's full. We have one across the river, would not go over for just a few things.

@panda1234 LOL! Oh yes, I am well aware of those yummy cookies.....however, they aren't in my new diet....aka lifestyle change....and they are too tempting since I can't stop with just one. Even their brand of Nilla wafers are good too, and just over $1 a box if I recall.
Aldi's has some great seasonal items too, so if you see something that is seasonal and like it, it pays to stock up.

These chicken breasts come in a red bag. I will have to check the freezer for exact name.
As I said we did them in the basket of the Ninja Foodi grill. I haven't done one in a plain old oven.
The buns were the perfect ratio of meat to bun.
I'm sure she will go and poke around Aldis again but she just went in for the chicken sandwich makings this time.
