Currants - Do some have hard seeds?

I bought some scones with currants. As I was eating one I first felt grit, and then found small, hard pieces of seeds. The currants were whole, and not smashed up, but each one was gritty inside with these little bits of hard seeds - like what you would get if you smashed a cherry pit with a hammer. I have had these scones before and never had this problem.

The place I ordered from will replace them, of course, but their customer service was mystified too and could not explain what happened.

Stems, perhaps?

I won't buy dried currants to bake with, because I think they are "crunchy" and I'd much rather have raisins (preferably golden raisins).

The seed bits were big enough for me to pick up. And the grit felt like sand - yet the currants were whole. A real mystery.

I do just the opposite. I always replace raisins with currants because of the slime factor.
