I collect cookbooks and seldom purchase new ones. Over the years my 'needs' have changed and so my 'habit' has, too. How to describe it? I used to want just about everything! And now I'm still enjoying my 'everything' collection, but wanting more reference books about methods, professional techniques, ethnic ingredients, etc., etc. So, I've moved from collecting recipes to learning more about how to cook, as well as the specific recipes.
I cannot believe the great finds I get at our local Goodwill, and Amazon.com has amazing prices on used books. Because we have a "Prime" account, occasionally there's no shipping charge either.
I've also learned that when we travel to areas with very well-to-do populations, the thrift stores have wonderful 'gifts' of all kinds, and as a certain generation passes, their great books are often obtained for a song.
All of that to say, check out "The Von Welanetz Guide to Ethinic Ingredients" by Diana and Paul Von Welanetz. This is an incredibly interesting 'old' cookbook and amazon.com has several used copies.
