I bought the Cook's Essential 5qt pressure cooker as a surprise birthday gift for my mom. We just used it and it would not pressure up. Now she is not a happy camper. Can anyone tell me how to work this PC? I've read several different ways to use it. Even the direction that come with it are very vague. I need help!!!! I'm about ready to throw in the towel and return it.

Welcome to the QVC forums.
Below is my personal CE Experience with two of their electronic digital pressure cookers.
Other CE consumers may have been luckier but I really was never satisfied with what I purchased.
I purchased 2 electronic digital pressure cookers from Cook's essentials.
One was their round 6 quart pc, and although I did love it finally it just stopped functioning after the warranty expired, and the manufacturer was too slow in replying, even before the warranty expired.
The other one was their cook's essential's large oval pc which QVC discontinued shortly after I purchased it. Now I know why!
The CE oval pc died the within the 30 day QVC return policy, and the round one also died right after the one year warranty expired.
I requested and received a full refund of my original price along with no return s&h charges since I notified QVC customer service that the item was defective.
I have been using stove top and electronic digital pc's for many years and know how to check the pressure regular and ensure the gasket is properly seated, and never fill above the maximum fill line.
My advice is return it if you just purchased it, and are already having issues, especially since this is a gift for your Mother.
Then buy a well known pressure cooker to your liking but one from a pressure cooker manufacturer with a great 1 or 2 year warranty. (Not a short lived warranty of 30, 60, or 90 days).
These tried and true pressure cooker manufacturers have lasted through the test of time, and their reputations for excellence are well known.
They still take pride in their pressure cookers, and you get what you pay for which is a great pressure cooker with a solid warranty and excellent customer service.
Their user guides offer not only tested recipes and consumer usage guidelines, but also offer troubleshooting tips as to what can cause their item to not perform properly, how to solve it or if need how to contact them directly for help and a*ssistance.
They make pressure cookers and that is their specialty, and they make them very well with pride and dependability.
They are also well know for their easy to reach customer service divisions via email communications or telecommunications, and they reply quickly.
You need a reputable pressure cooker manufacturer who has lasted through the test of time and has received great reviews from consumers and food editors who test and vouch for their cooking products.
Here is a link for 2015 pressure cooker recommendations and I hope you find a pc which will work well with no problems for your Mom and yourself, and wish you good luck, and happy safe pressure cooking.

Your post was, and is very bittersweet for me.......
You are so very welcome HappyShopper and I hope you find a pressure cooker you will really love as a gift for your dear Mom......One that will work well, have a great user guide, long consumer warranty, and dependable customer service.
My Mom and I loved to pressure cook together. We did so much together in the 61 years I had with her.
I lost her 4 years ago, and my heart stick aches for her, but I have so many infinite wonderful memories alive in my heart and mind, as well as in my surroundings.
I have plenty of her photographs and video's so I can see and hear her voice, as well as special occasion just because Mother Daughter cards.
Treasure these moments you spend with your wonderful Mother HappyShopper, because they will be very special times spent together for the both of you to recall with love, and remember.
There is nothing in the world like that very unique and ultra special blessed Mother Daughter bond. Savor it with her..... and God Bless you both!

Read directions
make sure you know for sure which buttons your pushing
make sure the pressure switch is on pressure setting (switch on top of lid) make sure lid is on tight.
make sure you 'lock ' the knob at top.
I've got 7 pressure cookers not a minute's worry on any of them.
it's got a ton of safety features , build in, if you don't do everything right it won't let it work.
