I've decided it is finally time to get rid of the old metal grater - I am probably the last person to still be using one! I mainly want something to chop/dice vegetables. I was cutting green pepper and onion and shredding carrots this morning and decided it was time to invest in something better. I would love recommendations! I don't want to spend a lot of money, but want to make a wise purchase. Thanks in advance!

Shopr, get a basic one from Target. I think they are about $15.
This way, if you go back to your knife, nothing was lost.

Do you have a large amount of people to feed, and are pressed for time? Are you looking to make the process faster? I bought a food processor thinking I would use it all the time, and I don't. I still have to buy, wash, and cut the veggies to size, and then wash out the machine (after dragging it out).
I still use my decent knives, a board, and a hand grater, and I guess I still enjoy the process of preparing a thoughtful meal while, say, listening to a ball game and looking out the window. I use the chopper, too. Just on occasion. My ideal would be to have a husband who cooks, and figures this all out. Not in this lifetime!!!

I have an old chopper I got from Pampered Chef, it's round and you (for lack of better description) pound on the top to chop. I guess I've just gotten comfortable with using it and it works great for me. You can only chop small amounts at a time, but that's not a problem for me. The more you pound the finer it chops, so I like that the control is all in my hands. It's easy to clean (I take it apart and put it in the dishwasher) and has held up very well over the years. I've seen other brands but feel the Pampered Chef model is high quality, especially because it has survived my pounding on it for well over a dozen years!

Sweetbay - If you find that hubby and he has a brother let me know! I just want to be able to cut veggies without shredding my fingers and nails! We are empty nesters so i don't cook for a large group often and don't want to go with something expensive as I wouldn't use it every day. I don't know whether I should look at a smaller chopper (Black & Decker & Kitchen Aid both have them) or go with a nonelectric box type. I'm really clueless here!

Well, he has 7 brothers and I'm not sure if they can cook. All I know is, his Mom survived the birth of 9 and some lessons were either never learned, or learned the wrong way! We make it seem easy in the household, don't we? Where was Dad? (out chipping branches with lots of noise - couldn't be bothered except when . . . you know). Men.
You'll find a chopper you like. A Harley?

You might take a look at the video for the K40357 -
Genius 10-piece 6 Cup Mix Slice and Chop Set
I tried another one similar to this, which was a piece of junk. This one has a lot more capability and more pieces. I mainly wanted to be able to grate cabbage (fairly small) for cole slaw in a hurry, with little mess. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised when I got this one. The handle goes forward to chop and backward to mix, so it gets all the pieces and chops them - you can grate as fine or as coarse as you like. You can put in chicken for chicken salad and chop that, and you can add things without having to open it up - there's a place in the top to drop things in. The slicer blades work well also, and you can julienne with it. Then it has mixer blades - I haven't tried those yet but they can be used for cake batter, etc.
It has suction cups that hold it tight to the counter, so it's easy to use. And one of the best parts, it's easy cleanup. It's not one of those expensive pieces of equipment, but for someone who just wants to grab something easy and simple to work, and have it do what it's supposed to, I like it. The reviews are mixed, but seem to be more positive than negative.

Careful what you wish for.
The last time DH cooked for me, it was spaghetti with mayo, ranch dressing and ketchup.
That's why it was the last time he cooked for me.
Or when I was chopping and asked him to put 2 tablespoons of oil in the hot pan and he poured in 1/3 of the jar.
Stay out of my kitchen!
