Re: Chex Mix -- No Longer Fashionable?

So glad to hear I'm not the only extreme-lover of Chex Mix! Woman Very Happy

I want to be on the holiday gift list of those who give it to friends in tins.

I purchased a bag of Chex Mix snack in the grocery story but sadly it was a bland imitation of the real deal.

Does anyone have the original Chex Mix recipe from the 1960s? They have indeed tweeked the recipe through the years, and all the "original" recipes I've seen online include bagel chips. Bagel chips weren't around until the 1980s.

I want to make those oyster crackers. Those look pretty darn good!

One thing I thought of why people may not eat it.  Did you put a spoon in the mix so they could scoop out a portion?  If not, maybe they didn't want to eat something that people would put their fingers in.

That's a good point. I thought I always put a big spoon in the pan, but maybe not...  Hmm... Have to remember that next time.

Re: Chex Mix -- No Longer Fashionable?

The Deep South DIsh site says this is the original recipe.  They have a picture of a 1952 ad with this and a nice article about the history and variations:

Wonderful nibbling
at snack-time!

Try this new PARTY MIX

Add 1/2 c. butter in shallow baking pan. Stir in 1 T. Worcestershire sauce. Add 2 c. Wheat Chex, 2 c. Rice Chex, and 1/2 c. nuts. Sprinkle with 1/4 t. salt and 1/8 t. garlic salt; mix well. Heat 30 mins in 300 degree oven, stirring every 10 minutes. Cool.

Re: Chex Mix -- No Longer Fashionable?

if i dont buy the starter box (which comes with the seasoning), this is the seasoning i use for a large batch. i like it better than the "original."

  • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) butter, melted
  • 4 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Re: Chex Mix -- No Longer Fashionable?

I buy a bag of the one called either bold or savory for camping trips.  I put it in a bowl on the picnic table and we grab a handful when we walk by.

I also periodically make "White Trash" candy mix that is fabulous but kind of expensive.    It uses Chex Mix, Cheerios, peanuts, M&M's, pretzels and then either powdered sugar or white chocolate.

Smiley Very HappyHey fellow foodies, here's a question: Do people still eat/love Chex Mix? You know the party snack made with all the different kinds of Chex cereal baked with Worcestire sauce and sometimes pretzels and nuts.

When I was a kid my mom always made big batches of the stuff for holiday parties. It was always my favorite, favorite snack. Woman Happy It was even regularly served at parties when I was in high school. O.k., I hung with a nerdy crowd.

In recent years when I've made it for parties not a single guest touches it. No one. Nadda. Not even the kids. The pan goes untouched.

The taco chips disappear. The potato chips vanish. Even the icky sheet cakes from Sam's Club with the wads of blue frosting are almost entirely consumed. But the bowls of Chex mix remain lonely. I have to eat it all myself after the guests go home. Alas.

Has Chex mix fallen out of fashion?

@AuntMame

Who cares if Chex Mix is perceived as no longer fashionable.   I make it, and I love it.  Low cal and low carbs snack.   Better than eating a bowl of potato chips.  Or icky sheet cake full of sugar in frosting.   Eat what YOU enjoy.

I'm simply concerned that no one seems to eat it when I make it for parties.
