I find the worst offense is expired items on the shelves. I always check the dates before putting items in my cart. There are also times when I will reject an item that is too close to an expiration date. For example, I can't eat a whole loaf of bread in two days (no I will not freeze it) or use an entire condiment jar in one month!
I use self check-out the majority of the time at Walmart and Publix. If the items ring at the wrong price, I either reject them entirely, or in the case of Publix, I get it free.
I had a pleasant surprise at my local grocery store yesterday. I had my 9 yo grandson with me and he loves pie. The store had a display table with several single pie slices and cakes so when he asked if he could have one I said yes and he picked out a container of 1 slice of peach pie. When I scanned the container to pay at the self check out I got a message to contact a store clerk. The clerk came over and scanned the item with her scanner and it told her the item had expired ! I was surprised that the system was set up to catch expired items but very thankful they could do that !! She went to the table, found a pie that was not expired and discovered every other item on the table had expired !!. They cleared that display table.

That's crazy! Albertsons owns Acme, a supermarket chain in my area. We don't have Safeway around here, but I think they are a part of Albertsons too. We should always be checking our receipts.
@PhilaLady1. My mom used to do all her shopping at Acme. I know it well.

@Travone. I haven't been in a grocery store in over 5 years. I have Walmart deliver everything and the pice is listed online. It never has varied from what I'm charge.
I do check to assure I haven't been charged for something I didn't get. I'm more likely to get something I didn't order, for free.

I wondered about this issue. It was a small amount. But I can see where errors can be made on produce. The store had cucumbers for 79 cents each. I bought one for a salad. I always go through my receipt when I get home. It was listed as an English cucumber for $1.49. I can see them making mistakes with the type of produce item, but in future, I will check when its being rung up.

@Kachina624 I haven't been either! Walmart has been surprisingly good (never shopped there for groceries before), Target as well. The star is Costco. Great produce and you can put notes to the shopper there and Target--which is great.
Sams pickup is super too! You always get your order, never had anything out of stock there, and the rotisserie chickens are great!
One word about Walmart. If I don't select NO SUBSTITUTIONS I think they give you whatever isn't selling rather than what you ordered--switch brands if your first choice is low, saving it for instore.

I've also have been surprisingly pleased with any delivery or curbside pickup, especially with produce.
For small orders I do go in the stores. Always with my reading glasses to check expiration dates. Needed mostly for bagged salads and bread products.
Once groceries are home I've gotten into the habit of marking the expiration dated with permanent marker in large, easily visible numbers. For things like different packages of cheese I'll see in seconds that the Provolone expires on 8/25/25 while the Mozzarella is good until 10/15. Same with package meat products. Makes it simple to know what to use first.

I don't know about most of you, but here they have drastically cut employees since Covid. We have Raleys Nob hill, Safeway here, and the store doesn't even look like it used to. Bare shelves a lot, product selection greatly reduced. Prices are not always updated immediately, and dated items are not removed like before. Tells me the stockers who work nights are not doing job, or can't because lack of supplies or help

Locally, we just have one real supermarket in an Acme. They seem as well-staffed as ever, maybe even more so with their in-store shoppers picking orders. The shelves are kept well stocked. I tend to be an early morning shopper (7:15 AM yesterday,) and they're often restocking as I'm shopping. You'll probably find more empty shelves if you shop later in the day.
The Acme surprised me yesterday as they'd moved some stuff around. The store had been absurdly stable with no aisles changing in probably ten years or more. They shuffled a few aisles before yesterday's visit, and that had me reading the overhead signs again to find out where stuff was now.
The only things I've had issues with date-wise there is snack food. And that's more of a vendor issue as they stock those areas and not the store. I typically use the self-checkout and keep an eye on the price I'm being charged. Bought about $115 worth of groceries and paid $73 with $42 in savings (sale prices, For U coupons).
