Well, I put it in the freezer for 15 minutes.  Turned it upside down and hit sides with knife.  Didn't budge.  Cut from side with sharp knife and pulled it out.  All in all, came out in 1 piece except on small spot.  Tastes really good for it being a box cake.  Thanks everyone!

I didn't see the beginning of the story, so I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate mention, but one thing I've enjoyed is that you can get these pre-cut rounds of parchment paper in a few different sizes.   They are very handy.  Smiley Happy

 

Even when I had something that wasn't the exact size of the rounds I have, it was really easy to cut down.

@ScrapHappy   Thank you so much for coming back annd sharing your happy ending with your cake.  I'll have to file away the suggestion about putting in the freezer the next time I am on the verge of a cake release disaster.
