I remember many years ago I bought a canister of italian bread crumbs and they got pushed back in the cupboard. At on point I noticed small moth like things flying around in the house. Checked the cupboard and there were small holes bored thru the canister from the escaping insects. Threw everthing out that could have that kind of stuff in it.

Sheesh, we can't have nothing. On the day I know I'll be making some kind of flour product I'm going to take flour out, put on counter, let it come to room temperature, and then put it back in freezer when I'm done with it.

Think I'll send an email to KingArthur flour. that's the only flour I use. See what they got to say. I trust them pretty well.

LOl to all those bug sightings. ahahahhahahaah

@SharkE   Many years ago I read a helpful hint in the Houston Chronicle, where bugs were plentiful, suggesting putting a bay leaf in you flour cannister will eliminate bugs.  So I throw one into my flour cannister and in all these years have never had a bug, nor have I put flour in the freezer.

DID you see A607246...new denim jacket, really different?

I buy flour in bulk, even though I am gluten free.  I make a lot of food for my DH and family that I can't eat.

I store flour in the freezer and always keep some in a five pound canister for immediate use.  I put a couple bay leaves in the canister.  They do not flavor the flour, and they keep it bug free.

My mother did the same thing.

There is no way to keep bugs out of flour; the bugs and eggs are there from harvest to milling, to bag filling, and storage in a warehouse or grocery store.

You can only control any home infestation with the way you store your flour, sugar, cornmeal, etc, but bugs are pretty much a given.  Unbeknownst to you, bugs and eggs have been in the flour you've consumed in your lifetime!

@RedTop So the bugs and bug eggs also raise the protein content and make bread rise more? Woman WinkWoman TongueWoman Embarassed

Years ago  bugs in flour happened to me and I was advised it was from glue that sealed the bags. I now transfer flour and similar staples to large plastic canisters as soon as I buy them; never have the problem anymore.

@Sooner   Only if the bugs have wings will it affect the rising.

@Sooner

Yep, I just put all flour and cornmeal in the freezer after I buy it, and don't give thought to the extra protein I've consumed for over 65 years.

@RedTop And as far as I know, it doesn't count as a food group serving or calories!  Woman Embarassed
