Do you buy them? And what do you do with them? I always wanted to try them and I finally found them in a local grocery store. I bought 3 bags and so far I have made sangria (which was delicious). Just curious if anyone has a good recipe for them?

When my husband was stationed in Sicily years ago, they were readily available there. I used them the same as I would any other orange. I think my favorite thing to do was make Blood Orange Meringue Pie, using a Lemon Meringue pie recipe, but substituting the juice and rind from the blood oranges. Very good!

I toss them in a salad with olive oil.

I like to use them with avocado in a salad topped with toasted almonds.

I just eat them like a regular orange. I have had ones that were very sweet and others...not so much.

Try this:
2 large or 4 small blood oranges
1 head of escarole or lettuce. If using escarole tear off dark outer leaves and tear inner leaves into bite-size pieces
1 small red onion, cut lengthwise into thin slices
12 pitted black olives (Gaeta or Nicoise)
4 anchovy filets (if anchovies aren't your thing you may substitute thinly shaved romano cheese)
1/4 cup EVOO.
2 tbsp. red, white or balsamic vinegar
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
pinch of FRESH oregano
salt to taste
1)Remove the peel and membranes from the oranges> Hold the segments over a bowl while removing the membranes.
2)Add the next four ingredients.
3)Just before serving toss in the oil, vinegar, pepper, oregano and salt.

I dont know if it is because of the weather, but the blood oranges have not been sweet or juicy this year, I am really disappointed, they used to be so juicy they would drip down my chin, and almost as sweet as candy.
