I watched a Sixty Minutes report (available online) last Sunday night about a scientist working in Mylasia doing research on the spreading of disease by bats. He predicted this pandemic 6 or 7 years ago based on his research and was working with the Wuhan Institute through a grant from the US to try to prevent it, then suddenly the grant was suspended due to some Congressional hanky panky. Go watch it yourself and decide.
@Kachina624, We watched that, too, and were disgusted. Much more of this and we might as well say goodby to science and embrace willful ignorance.
@suzyQ3 That report was so concerning to me that I went to the Sixty Minutes website and watched it again last night. Goodbye to science is right.

I don't know about loose garlic but if you buy it in the white sleeve it is from China.
I won't buy it in the sleeve because it's too small and it turns a neon green when you add wine or lemon juice to it.
I only buy the loose bulbs.

@Katmary wrote:There's a documentary on garlic from China on Netflix in the Rotten series, it was very interesting if you have the time to watch it. If I remember correctly the garlic with more roots isn't from China.
The episode is called "Garlic Breath." It includes some revelations about big names in California garlic. Not all of the garlic sold by CA garlic growers is California garlic is one thing to keep in mind, so check the source of the product you're buying if you want grown-in-CA garlic.
I've never bought anything but heads of garlic or organic garlic powder. Never garlic in jars, whole or minced. I get recall notices for food and household goods and have seen too many recalls of jarred garlic, going back many years, to feel it's a safe product. "Garlic Breath" also has some insights on how some of the garlic that winds up in jars is processed.

I even have some farmers that have greenhouses and I am able to get fresh veges all winter long! Garlic from China? Yikes! Not ever in my home! Please, please support your locals.
I go outside the market and look at the farmers' trucks. I see empty crates of fruits and vegetables from all over the world. The farmers are selling a lot of imported goods as well as what they grow. So it's entirely possible that a local farmer's market has garlic from China, grapes from Mexico, melons from Costa Rica, etc.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see. China's failure to inform the rest of the world about the seriousness of the Wuhan Chinese virus is responsible for the deaths of millions of people. They knew about this in November yet said nothing and "influenced" the WHO to downplay the seriousness of the epidemic. The banned travel within their own country while allowing their cititens to travel the world, spreading the virus to virtually every place on Earth. If you want to stick your head in the sand and ignore the facts, I pity you.

You make it sound like everyone lives near farms and cattle ranches and has ready access to locally grown foods and meats all year round...please

@Reever wrote:Just received an order from instacart and the garlic said "Product of China". In the trash it went. Please be aware of country of manufacture folks and stores need to be more transparet on their web sites. I will call the store manager tomorrow morning. China has very lax standards for pesticides and herbicides. Their waters are polluted and they use raw sewage as fertilizer. I will no longer consume any product from the dirty country of China.
I would doubt they are any more nasty than the United States and it's people..

Nope, don't include me in that bunch... I've only seen it on these boards related to food the posters will or won't buy...
