Re: Before there was a toaster, there was Pan Fried Toast.

Marienkaefer, how does one grill bread with wine? It sounds good, but I'm not clear if you're dunking the bread in the wine (yummy by itself) and then grilling it, or if you add the wine to the pan? I seldom eat bread, but when I do, I love to butter one side, pan grill it, and eat it with freshly ground salt and black pepper.

Barbara, we used to make that at home, too, we called it 'skillet toast'. So much better than the toaster. Still make it when I have the skillet hot for eggs, etc. Sometimes when my kids were young, I would make the skillet toast, then put a slice of cheese on top to melt....hence...'cheese toast' !!!

My mom made cheese toast on her cast iron skillet also; yum.

We still make fig preserves nd we like the syrup on toast, waffles, pancakes ,and hot buttered cornbread too.! Even though I own a Hello Kitty toaster that prints her cute face on the bread,we prefer oven or skillet toast. It's a whole 'nother level of deliciousness!!!
