I am thinking about buying some 'rings' for baking cakes. At first I thought if using the rings you would bake the cake and then use the rings to cut out the shape after the cake cools...but from the videos I saw it appears as if you use the rings to bake with. That seems to be very time consuiming to me, you would have to buy quite a few rings in order to cut down on baking time.
Am I missing something? ...and maybe it does not make a differece which way it is done. The rings I was looking at were about 3" around and tall.
Also wondering which way it would be easier for the cake to release.
I am just looking for recommendations before I order. Thanks

I have used cake rings once or twice to help with constructing layer cakes that have specialty or potentially more fluid fillings like mousse instead of just frosting, but I'm not sure I'd use them for baking. I believe the idea is that baking in a cake ring makes it so you can just remove the ring and then slide the cake off a sheet pan instead of removing the cake from a formed pan, right? I'd worry about leakage, as when using a springform pan. I think I'd prefer using slings or silicone liners to help make removal easier from a pan rather than hoping a ring would be reliable. But I honestly haven't tried that baking method, so this is just speculation. There are lots of great baking websites and forums online—I'm sure someone has listed pros and cons somewhere based on their experience. Good luck!

This is interesting--I haven't heard about using rings for cakes--need to check out youtube I guess. So how does the batter stay inside the ring? Do you wrap it in foil first? When I made cakes, I use baking spray, not oil but a spray for baking--comes out white. That worked great. And I covered the springform pans in foil too.
