Re: Bad News for Beef

[ Edited ]

We eat mostly beef.  I love to cook and bake and we dislike eating out because for most things, I can replicate the same thing at home, which tastes better and is cheaper.  It is just the two of us, and for what a meal costs in a restaurant, I can buy the groceries I need to prepare the same thing at home only we'll get at least 2 meals out of it.  We are fortunate that we can afford to keep eating basically what we want although I do try to buy expensive cuts of meat when they're on sale and freeze them. I know we are blessed, but I also don't spend a lot of money on clothes, makeup, purses, house stuff, etc.  I'm a saver by nature, but the one thing I won't hesitate to spend money on is good food.

@River Song

Same here.  I gave up eating beef years back.  I rely on other sources of protein, including chicken and fish.  It just happened I felt differently about eating meat, and everyone I know respects my decision.  And I respect theirs.

I will deal with it.  I don't eat lots of beef anyway but if I see a nice cut of beef in the store that looks like just the right size and not much fat, etc.  I will buy it.

It is part of my rotation--chicken, rarely pork (I just don't like it that much) fish, shrimp.  Some days are meatless.  Yesterday I made bacon & eggs for supper.  It's just me so I can have what I want.

I feel similarly, @Ainhisg.  We are blessed that we can afford quality food.  We look at food as fuel and choose what we buy/eat for the nutritional value and health benefits.  The same logic goes for what we won't eat.  The way I look at it is "pay now or pay later". Pay more for good food options up front or buy cheap unhealthy food and pay the doctor later.

We get our beef from a local rancher.  All organic and natural grass fed.  Check out ranchers in your area if you have any.  Prices can be substantially less.  We pay around $5 lb including the charge for butchering, custom cut & wrap.  So much better than the ****** you get in the store.

We may eat out 2-3 x a month.  Mostly would be at lunchtime.   Sometimes I just have an appetizer or salad.  I watch the sales, and have a full freezer.  We will not chintz on good food.  That said, there is only two of us to feed.  We do eat beef several times a week, but what I cook, we can get a few meals out of a dinner.  I do make alot of soups and chili often.  I work at a family restaurant one day a week, and I can't believe how many people eat there constantly.  We also eat chicken, pork, turkey and fish, pasta.

The best tasting beef comes from pasture raised with some grain fed.  Not grain finished so much, but some grain in the diet helps the flavor and texture a lot.

My dad raised beef that always some of the ones he took to market were rated Prime and bought locally by restarant groups.  Those were never in the meat counter at the grocery store.

We tested a lot over the 30 years.  The best we ever had were steers that were pastured in a carefully maintained lush grass pasture with access to some grain.  It did make a real difference.
