Even my old & worn out (if we're going beyond the kitchen) stuff is my good stuff. Yes, I use all my good things as often as the occasion allows.
However, I have silver flatware that has been relegated to -- somewhere -- and since you don't throw that in the dishwasher, that's why it's -- somewhere.

I just have everyday stuff, no "good stuff" so I use my dishes/glassware every day. The only other set I have is Christmas dishes that I use instead of my regular ones from Thanksgiving until the new year.

I am making an attempt to use the “good stuff” more often. I just can’t put our silver in the dishwasher! Ouch! I hand wash. Same thing with the “good” china. My DD does have an interest in inheriting these things. She lives very well with nice things, so no rush.
So much of saving for best comes with one’s upbringing in cases I know. My parents lived through the Depression, and so many lived through WWII when everything was scarce. I remember the tradition of the big and fancy dinner on Sunday after church! I am making an attempt to use our dining room more often. I call it my “trophy room.” Crazee, right?

The saving the good stuff for special occasions came from my parents. Both parents grew up during the Depression and neither had two nickols to rub together. So anything like china or crystal was saved for company.
I do have a set of solid sterling silver flatware I inherited from an aunt that I use every day. I must be the only person on the planet that doesn't have a dishwasher so hand washing doesn't bother me.
My mother purchased a set of Lenox China for me when I got married and we did use it for dinner parties through the years but now it sits in the china cabinet. It breaks my heart to just donate the set because it cost my mother a pretty penny when she could ill afford it.
I just packed up a set of good glassware to donate. I thought I would use them but found that the top diameter was so narrow I had a hard time washing them by hand, so off they go to someone else's home.

Yes, we use our good stuff, and have nothing saved for company.
When I helped clear out my aunts house after she died, and my grandmothers house when she went into assisted living, I was upset at the amount of good stuff that went to the landfill because it was ruined.
My grandmother had pajamas, gowns, housecoats, bed sheets, bath towels, etc., that were tucked away as the good stuff. The sheets and towels were in dresser drawers full of mouse nests, so everything was chewed on and just went straight into garbage bags.
Beautiful embroidered nightgowns and robes were found in plastic bags in the closet covered in mildew. I would have loved to have been able to wash all of that good stuff and donated it to Union Mission instead of paying to dump it in the landfill.

My grandmother was one that would save it for a special occasion or for good when company was coming. When she died her hope chest was filled with stuff she was saving that was never worn or used and had to be thrown away because it had become dry rotted.
I don't save anything. I use it. If it was given to me as a gift the person that gifted it probably bought it for me to use, not put away in a drawer or closet or cabinet for tomorrow.
At some point in life, tomorrow will never come.

Our everyday dishes and drinkware are quite nice, so I don't feel the need to for the china, silver, and crystal very often.

I believe that most people ( or families- individuals) have always had -W A Y too much, i.e., 'things/ clothing/ stuff/ ++ more STUFF / miscellaneous 'whatsoever' that they will ever need. ESPECIALLY CLOTHES.
Many people have either inherited, kept on buying, or filled a void by accumulating more STUFF to their already packed away STUFF and have no idea what is to come when the need .......for 'de'-CLUTTERING hits them in the face. Do not become a person caught on the edge.
We are very happy and contented, here, with a comfortable home, and love just a simple life style, having the bare essentials. Three sets of sheets and towels is my limit.
Begin now by donating, gifting, or you'll end up with a room filled with just STUFF & !! more STUFF!! ... whoa, wondering where do I begin ? ! ?
It happens more quickly [BAM] than you can imagine.
Yes, use ``YOUR` treasured away STUFF, now, and if you break anything, it's one less thing to ponder on. !!
Most of what I have... that I cannot use ...( three of the same things ) would be gifts, definitely beautiful inherited STUFF from three to four family members that have died.
I do not do any hosting anymore, nor, to I buy more STUFF.
The only STUFF I do own that was purchased is my collection of Birkenstocks = 15 different styles and prints of unusual discontinued pairs. I did think that through very carefully from twelve years ago because of the comfort and Quality material that is very difficult to find today, and all are authentic German Made.
If it cannot be put in a dishwasher or washing machine / dryer, - I do not want...
I have no daughters, not a daughter- in-law, yet, so everything is gifted to someone whose need is supplied, or sold, i.e., cars, piano, woodwind and brass musical instruments.
Our son has a large home that was purchased 3 years ago, and only wants, or needs very little. One Smart Son!
And, that's my story.
Very intersting topic @Sooner
- oh indeed. NAES

@RedTop Yes! We went through a house full of unfinished craft projects and night gowns and slips and such all carefully tucked away.
I think most of us have something in night clothes we keep "in case" of an illness and then rotated to daily use when something else is bought.
And a lot of it came from/comes from unwanted gifts that were never used but the recipient would have felt guilty to throw away. That is why I am such a proponet of buying people gifts they want, not surprising them, or buying something you want to give them--that they really don't want or need.
Probably most have a "company" set of dishes. And even if we don't use them every day, we should use them sometimes! My aunts was in a box in the closet--and the finish was crackled.

I am.
Especially my home goods, like linens and dishes etc.
I'm 60, and I have more than enough of most of this stuff to last me three lifetimes. I have used all of it but some of it sparingly over the years, but I'm getting things out and using them more often and for no special occasion.
I know my son won't want most of it, and I highly doubt my brother's children will want any of it, even the family passed down stuff, so I'm enjoying it now.
